Double Bass Is it time to burn my Real Book?

Posted by Troy (couldn't figure out to do the quote right) "You know, the thing is, there are some great tunes in there and I know....I don't know...more than 1/2 of them. But, they won't get me by on most gigs I'll get called for here in Seattle. I could build (and have) a list that I consider...

    What to play for friends/girlfriends

I just wanted to see what everyone likes to have up their sleeve when a friend or girl you are trying to impress asks you to play for them. It's kind of a tricky situation for me seeing that the bass is what it is. Any ideas on songs/melodies/grooves to learn would be great.

Advice for aspiring Studio Players or anyone that wants to "Go Pro"

I have a question When you guys say that a gig is a gig, and to take what you can get because you don't know where it might lead, how far do you think I should take it?

Take good care of your hands!

Try Chinese Acupuncture. I was totally skeptical when by music director told me, but after just three sessions I'm now able to play for 3 hours before my arms starts acting up again. Before the acupuncture it was more like 20 minutes, and I had it everywhere. Back of the right hand, up my...

How to deal with egotistical musicians

I think my favorite so far was to give him the bass and ask him to show me how it's done. The worst part of the situation is that this is a community college jazz ensemble and the leader/director thinks the piano player is hot ****. He's also well over twice my age which probably doesn't help...

How to deal with egotistical musicians

I have been playing with a small group for my school jazz band for a couple months now. Unfortunately the experience has been far from a good one, mainly because the piano player is one of those guys who just doesn't have the people skills to work well with others. Often times he will try to...

NOT playing for a few months....

Go find the best Chinese Acupuncturist in your city. I was having the same problem for the last six months, and after only 3 weeks of acupuncture I am able to play again for hours at a time. It's amazing how well it has worked for me. DO IT NOW, before you lose the chance.

Best musical advice you ever got

My first bass lesson, I was asked to play for my teacher. This was only several months after I switched from guitar to bass. He let me play for about 10 seconds before he stopped me then told me the best line I can remember from his lessons. "the bass is a four stringed drum."

I am looking for a city where the music scene's hoppin and the bass supply is low

Where did you read that Seattle has a good music scene? Everywhere I'm hearing that it's really slow, and the only way to do it is to be an incredible jazz drummer

I am looking for a city where the music scene's hoppin and the bass supply is low

I am about to graduate Highschool (Seattle area) and am still undecided as to what school I want to go to. I am looking to major in bass performance but I think that what matters more than the school, is the city. Ideally I would like to find a city that has a shortage of bass players and a...
