    Double Bass Scratchy E String

Hey Everyone, I play German and French Bow. I have had two sets of strings, and no matter what I do, my E String sounds like %$^ until I get it going. It sounds very airy and scratchy. It requires a lot of pressure to start, and the first half a second of starting is an awful sound. My bow...

Double Bass Help with the German bow

Hey Everyone, So I play standing ( I can sit fine, but standing is much more fun and easier to move around). Recently I switched to German bow over French because I find that it works better for my build. However, hitting the E-string while playing is rough. I have to pivot the bass to get a...

    Double Bass Bent Endpin

Hey everyone, So I finally made a bent endpin. I enjoying playing on it, and I get a much better sound than sitting. What I am wondering is what angle people tend to put their "socketed" endpins at? Mine is in the original endpin hole. I have been placing it directly to the left of my bass...

Double Bass Help with Rosin sound

Had it rehaired too, no difference

Double Bass Help with Rosin sound

Zynex strings. It isn't a technique issue. I've had several other bassists give it a go. It just feels like it isn't gripping 100% no matter how much rosin I use.

Double Bass Help with Rosin sound

I keep getting a really scratchy hollow sound. I use pop's rosin. I have varied the bow tensions, but no luck. Does Rosin brand actually make a difference? Or is this just a brand war?

    Double Bass Standing Vs. Sitting

Thanks Neil, This looks great. I had a similar idea involving welding two endpins together to make a T shaped, but this looks much more elegant haha. Thanks!

Double Bass DB players: How often do you take lessons

I generally have one about once every 5 or 6 weeks. Usually by then I have 4 or 5 issues that I just can't seem to work through on my own. I think once a week as a disciplined adult is a bit much, given work, family etc. I'd say two lessons every 3 months is good. Also, see if your teacher will...

    Double Bass Standing Vs. Sitting

Okay, so I play sitting strictly. I play cello style with a slight angle towards my inner thigh. Pretty standard for classical/arco. So I have been wanting to stand lately due to a back issue (car accident). I have tried the bent endpin (didn't help), and I can't get a good posture the same way...

    Double Bass Rabbath Positions

I am confused on the Rabbath positions. I understand where 1st and 2nd positions are. However, third position seems to Eb,E,F with first finger in line with Eb. This allows a back pivot to D, and a front pivot to F. This is all out of Rabbath method book. A few people have told me that...

    Double Bass Bridge Allignment

With the new adjustments, it brings my string length to 42'' from centre of bridge.

    Double Bass Bridge Allignment

Apparently I have a D-Neck bass. However, the D harmonic on the g string doesn't line up with the heel of the bass. To compensate I moved the bridge towards the tail piece about 3/4''. This has completely fixed the problem. However, the bridge feet are now about 3/4'' below the inner f-hole...

    Double Bass Bridge Moved

    Try this

    Double Bass Bridge Moved

Well the D harmonic on the G string is about a semi tone too close to the nut. That is my hand hits an Eb when I hit the heel and maintain correct hand position. I was TOLD that I had a D neck bass. Maybe it is an Eb neck. If that is the case, I'll just add a small piece of rubber near the heel...

    Double Bass Bridge Moved

Hey Everyone, I have a 3/4 side upright. Can anyone tell me the "proper" string length from bridge to nut in cm? My bridge is a bit off as harmonics have moved a tad. Thanks
