If a luthier uses the word "drilling", find someone else. A proper DB luthier is worth the time and expense and might have a loaner instrument.

The scenario I imagine every time the subject of upright bass case with backpack straps is this: Bassist puts bass on back, walks to the venue; goes through a doorway or two, by half squatting to clear the scroll. The one time the squat isn't quite enough, the scroll catches, the bassist falls...

It's normal. I remember taking a bass in to Gage's years ago and upon seeing the fingerboard wear went up to about 3rd position, Mike w said, "Ah-a workingman's bass".

I think when that happens, the core is compromised and the string's being held together by the windings. Time to replace the set.

I just got a rehair after a couple months of rosin experimentation. I started with two swipes of "Winter" and 4 of fresh Carlsson, and everything feels like I want it to feel. My rosin humidor is going up on a high closet shelf next to the Big Bag of Strings to remind me to stop futzing around...

For several years, I've used a bow sleeve made by Birdie Chesanek that I got on Etsy; it ties around the neck heel and hangs between the bridge feet. My two Messina cases don't even have outside bow pockets.

$5-600 tops, purchase price, with at least another $5-600 for setup, (bridge work, tailgut, saddle, fingerboard dressing),strings, pickup.... It's a plywood bass-a strong fundamental E string isn't in it, but that will actually make it easier to amplify.

I gave the Kaplans a good workout, and while they sound great in the practice room, they crapped out in the halls I play in regularly. After a brief flirtation with Original Flexocors and Tempera Bassos, I'm back to Bel Cantos and will put the bag o'strings in my storage locker next to my SB12...
