When I think of grounding hum I don't think of a hum related to the pickup balance. These pickups do just sound like the 60 cycle hum of a single coil, and it goes away when both pickups are on in full.

That was genuinely my best guess as to what the issue was, but I'd never heard it mentioned before so I figured my brain was just making poopie up and finding excuses.
