Double Bass Advice on buying, please

One other thing about the Roth: It is considerably heavier than a carved or plywood bass, if that matters to you.

Double Bass Advice on buying, please

I had one given to me, and took it out to sea a few times. Decent for practice, but I couldn't get a clear tone or much volume out of it (though I didn't try a set-up or even changing strings). Ended up giving it away.

Double Bass Thoughts on sight reading in community orchestras?

I don't remember where I found this article, but I saved it to my drive to look at once in a while. It's from a cello exercise book that I have not read (links at the end of the text). Hope it helps

Levy's also have a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser.

Last Albums You Listened To In Their Entirety?

I picked up a copy of the Trinity session by Cowboy Junkies at the thrift store Saturday. Nice grooves, and the bassist got a cool groovy tone.

You can also look for an auto upholstery shop. I used to do a lot of those type jobs

    Double Bass Oliv strings

I have not found olivs or Eudoxas to have tuning issues, once they're stretched out. Doesn't mean I'm always in tune, but that's on me!

    Double Bass Oliv strings

I just put an Oliv G back on today. I've been using Eudoxa ADG with Spiro weich long E/C. Loved them all except the G was just too twangy up around D & E. Maybe I don't play enough, but I haven't had issues with unravelling, and the tuning stabilizes after a couple of days. I'd be willing to try...

Phil Jones Bass C2 – Small Cab, Big Surprise (NCD)

I have a C2, and power it with PJB's 200W amp. Great transparent sound, as long as it's not pushed too hard. I use it in two instances: 1. rehearsals with a small band, playing bass guitar (P or JCB), and 2. personal monitor with my bluegrass band, up near my chest - boosting mids to give me a...

56 years later, carpal tunnel strikes.

Dude, I'm sorry for your pain. Please keep updating. I'm ten years your junior, but have an appointment next week with a specialist. Only pain in the wrist/thumb for now, but it has become enough of an issue to seek a professional opinion. Between now and then I have a rehearsal and 2 concerts...

Double Bass Best rehair in DC area?

I've used Brobst, Gailes, and Bob's house of basses. All were good. IIRC, Gailes added the highest premium for bass bows

Double Bass One or two on a stand?

Having poor eyesight myself, I much prefer 1 to a stand, and have been granted that in all groups I've played in. In my current orchestra (semi-pro), the bassists are 1/stand, all using ipads and individual page turn pedals. In other string sections, it's 2/stand, some paper, some tablets...

Double Bass Why can't I bow?

OP: It isn't clear -- are you using the same bow on both basses? My son is playing cello in middle school, and uses a different instrument, but the same bow for each. Also, if you can take pics of the pegbox and afterlength of the strings on both basses, the brain trust here can identify them...

    Double Bass Jack DeJohnette RIP.

Growing up without a good jazz station within my California farm town, I didn't have a good way to pick out recent records on forays into SF or Berkeley. Not yet a bassist, I used the strategy of buying albums with Jack DeJohnette drumming. I was rarely disappointed. RIP

The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

This weekend I needed to replace a tube in my UA. Glancing at it while taking it from my house to the shed to find a proper wrench, I was surprised by some metallic colors I'd never noticed before. The paint is really quite lovely! Be sure to take your Sushi-boxes out into the sunshine once in...
