Based on the tonewoods, I'd say pickups are an issue. Bartolini's are typically dark pickups. You could always cut treble on the EQ, or switch to nickel wound strings, have your strings die or use flatwounds.
I'm looking for the most transparent pickups since I love the tone of my bass acoustically, but sounds like mud when I plug it in, no matter how much EQ or string changes.
Distorted? I use the Pork Loin. You can blend your clean tone with the over drive, as well as what I think are presence and low pass filter knobs when you unscrew the back of the pedal.
I personally don't know much, but bongomania would be a great resource. He's got tons of compressor reviews but he recommends that you read the FAQ first.
