What pickups would fit well in this chain?

Hi all

Newbie here, after some advice.
I write grunge rock and I'm preparing to record.
Here is my gear list..

Guitar - Gibson Les Paul, DS-1, Orange Tiny Terror, Shure SM57.
Drums - BFD
Bass - Squier P Bass with stock pickups, Sansamp RBI, DI.

So, I'm thinking I should switch up the Squier pickups for something of better quality to improve my bass tone, at least until I can afford a real Fender.
I have about £100 to spend, and I always consider buying used.

What would you recommend?

do not worry about that. these pickups [fmpov] are good enough. muddiness is more likely to come from old strings and if you really want to spend that £100 on bass - get some new strings. also, RBI will take good care of you.

The usual question is: what do you want to change about the tone of your bass?

From what I heard, Squier pickups are overwound. You can always get them rewound by a luthier or do it yourself.

Duncan SPB-1. Cheapest way to get the tone of a 60s P bass. And new strings too, but you should install them a few weeks before the recording if you ask me, it sound way better to me.

Which Squier P bass do you have? Personally, if its a VM or CV an upgrade to a "Real Fender" may be a lateral move.

Without knowing exactly what sound your after, my generic recommendation for a P bass would be a Fender Original 62.

i'd agree that it depends which squier you have, if its a vm i'd probably leave it stock as i've heard good things about them. it also depends what you're looking to get out of the swap (increased output? etc.). for a classic p-bass tone i'd go with a seymour duncan spb-1, and for increased output a spb-3 (quarter pounder). i'd also recommend replacing the wiring harness (pots,capicitor) - this is often overlooked and is important in getting a good quality signal. strings will also make a big difference (often just as much or more than new pickups). i'd buy a couple different sets and see how they sit in the mix - i'm a big fan of compression wound or half round strings, they are halfway between a roundwound and a flatwound string. you could probably do all of the above with your budget if you did the wiring yourself.
