    Maple or Rosewood

Ive always felt that the rosewood had a kind of roughness....like I could feel the wood grain under the string, whereas the maple felt smooth and hard. Maple rules.

Scales and Modes One String at a Time?

yes, go slowly and get each one before you move up the neck....scale and mode arpeggio, up and down, nice and easy. This scale approach will be at my site when Im finished getting the video part underway... at Link Removed its all free.

Scales and Modes One String at a Time?

Yes.....I agree that one would really benefit by learning any scale on one string to see the "snapshot" of interval spaces that make up the "personality" of the scale. Then I teach all the modes and arpeggios all the way up "stacked" from C to C. Each mode is learned by seeing its "face" on...

C'Mon Man! That wasn't my point at all. I didn't cut shredders at all.... I respect all good musicians I was saying that the guitar has licks and the bass doesn't lend itself that way, .....you know...the Hendrix type typical licks you can do with the g-b-& e strings. Ive written answer...

    Beginning bass questions

Totally run from that Teacher, the #1 thing a teacher should do is be supportive. You have also realized that a bass solo is harder than a guitar solo....because instead of playing "licks" that fit and color up the song easily.....a bassplayer has to use a good understanding of scales/color...

Are you studying both to play both in one band? Whats your study discipline like? Who is teaching you either thing, what do they say? Can you stick with a long book till you finish it? (Reading I Mean......I'm Serious!) What if you end up mediocre on both? If you answered yes to any...

    which scale book?

I'll tell ya one thing when I look at a book to buy, if its got what I call "profound knowledge" on each page...then I buy it. If its got one thing like the Ionian Scale on every page in different keys, they are selling you fluff. Each page should really teach something new and build. That's...

Look...Don't learn things you'll never use....don't practice things you'll never play....if you want to learn Theory, study the C Scale. Look.............Did all the Blues Greats know all the theory when they played such great things....? My free course is coming out that is specifically...

What are good ways to approach playing over chords?

In the most basic way of looking at it.....You can always play the roots. The next thing would the the 1 5 1 5 1 5 bassline.......(like One Way Out, Allman Bros) The next thing would be to play the arpeggios....the 1-3-5 or 1-3-5-7 up and or down to each other..... Next would be the repetitive...
