    I am heavily influenced by Victor Wooten and Mark King and I find slapping on the D-string sounds fine as long as it isn't intended to provide a substantial bass part in the context of a song.

    For the most part a well-programmed VST plug-in should sound just as good as a dedicated digital effects pedal. If you're an analog enthousiast though as far as I know, dedicated analog pedals are the only option.

    I think that would make sense. Maybe cut some slits in the piece of ebony for the strings to run through so that it stays in place?

    I have my jazz bass pickups almost as low as they will go with no problems. Just crank up the gain and it should sound fine ;)
