It's harder if you have really light gauge strings on your bass guitar and then you switch to a really crappy upright. If you decide to rent one, make sure the bridge is the right size or it will kill your hands.

I currently use elixir strings, but I have noticed that they get kind of 'hairy' almost. I really like the long life and clear sound of these strings, but I hate the hariness. Is there an alternate type of strings that has the same life and sound but don't get hairy?

If you're playing a casual, as long as somebodys not yelling, the band should be cool. but really, that's pretty rude if everybody else is listening. Especially if the event is promoted as a jazz show.
