The Bass You've Had the Longest

Bought mine new in '79. I still have it and I still play it.

Making it yours do you usually modify your new basses?

The most modification I've done was to my Ric 4001: removed pick up cover and install a plate to fill in the space around the pick up, and added a Hipshot bridge. Otherwise I don't modify my basses. Oh yeah, I did add a Drop D tuner on my Ray 34.

Was Your First Bass (Basses) What Your Idols Played?

In '76 my choices for a bass were a Fender Jazz and a Gibson G3. Being left handed there was not much to chose from in small town Iowa and I needed a bass ASAP. There was too much neck dive with the Fender so I went with the Gibson. I ended up having to sell it so I could pay my property taxes...

What bass have you owned the longest and do you still play it?

I special ordered this Rick in '79. Cost me an extra $50 to get it left handed. Still my favorite bass.

What are you most picky about?

It has to be left handed. If it's not, forget it.

So, what were you doing 30 years ago?

Thirty years ago I was a band director (grades 6-12) in a small public school.

One Song to Save the World...

Brings back memories of the years when I was a band director.

    Acoustic bass

I have ventured into the acoustic bass arena. At first I was looking at the Takameni GB30CE-LH. It arrived damaged and the company did not have any more in stock to replace it so back to square one. After searching the internet I found and bought this used Dean Exotica Quilt Ash bass on Reverb...

    Worship Bass Pedalboards

This setup covers just about anything I need. The only thing I might add is a tuner after my Korg headstock tuner needs to be replaced.

What were your last 3 basses or bass related purchases of this year?

The last three things I bought: 1. For my Rick, I bought a Hipshot bridge. 2. I removed the Treble pickup cover on my Rick so I bought a chrome treble bezel to fill in the open area. 3. For my Sterling Ray 4, I bought a Hipshot Bass Xtender (drop-D tuner), which I haven't received yet.

Pedals you wanted ...until you tried them.

For me, I was disappointed in the EXH Bass MicroSynth, mostly because of the lack of sustain.

Responding to "the bass is a lesser instrument" comments

If I gave "that someone" my bass to show me how it is done, chances are he/she is going to be right handed and I'm left handed, and so are my basses. I don't know many people who can play a bass upside down (though I have seen a few on YouTube).

Your Best Pedal Purchase of 2019?!

My best purchase is the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass DI V2. The main reason for buying this pedal is for the tone controls, plus I like being able to run my signal to both the mixing board and my amp thereby being able to set volume I want on stage and the sound guy set the volume for the mix. Currently...

For the old folks: what did you pay, back in the day, for what is now a "vintage" amp?

Back in '73, I bought a Traynor YBA-1 Bassmaster for around $300. It had two cabs: one with two 15" speakers, and the other with four 10" speakers.

Any other bass players immune to bass acquisition syndrome?

My first bass was a Gibson G3 restrung so I could play it left handed. I bought a lefty Rickenbacker which was my main bass for the next 30 years. Then curiosity about 5-string basses reared its ugly head but where does a lefty find one to try out? I wanted a Rickenbacker but they were not...
