    Your Go-To Short Scale?

That looks like the "Mikey Way" bass that Fender made for a while.

    Your Go-To Short Scale?

I play a Madeira 30 1/2" bass. It was made by Guild as their 'off brand' in the early 70's. It has seperate vol and tone for each pup and the 3 way to choose which pups (neck-both-bridge) to play through. I love it, it's very light, about 6lbs, and very fast. I've tried most strings but...

i don’t use my pinky finger most of the time, is this detrimental to my playing??

I use mine all the time. I can't reach three frets without it, even though I play a short scale bass. I have short stubby fingers, and yes it's true what they say. LOL It satisfies me and that's good enough. When I first read your post, I thought you were asking about the right hand. How...

Who inspired you to play bass, Paul McCartney or Paul McCartney?

I never cared for the Hofner sound. Didn't want a double either. My first was a Gibson Grabber with the sliding pickup. It had more of the sound I wanted and it was't tinny!! I went to bass because they carry the grove.

    NBD Day: Unicorny Matsumoku Goodness

If it's a medium scale what is it? You don't see a full 2 octave neck in a scale shorter than 34".

What gave you the sound you have been searching for?

My Madeira bass, with Fender nylons, Ampeg Micro head (200w) and 4-8 SVT cab and 112 SVT cab. I line out if I need it but usually don't. I've got a GK stack if I need more volume, but it doesn't have the tightness of the Ampeg set-up.

    Anybody gigging?

There's a few that are getting gigs in SW Missouri, but not many. I hope it changes with the weather.

    Bass for each style

I've always liked a dual humbucker, one close to the neck and the other close to the bridge. Never been a rich guy so I bought a Madeira short scale, made by Guild, looks just like their JSII. Built the same way, made in the early 70's. It will do about any sound I need. I play through a GK...

    How good are you?

I'm your basic average bass player. I've played in mostly cover bands and haven't found anything I can't play yet. Some are harder than others, and take longer, but most I can pick up pretty quick. I played in one mostly originals band and that was a lot of fun. I like being the first bass...

leave clip-on tuner on while performing?

At practice I leave it on all the time. No reason not to. On stage I turn it around backwards so the display is behind the head where no one can see it but me. That way if I forget to take it off between sets it still won't show. Mine's pretty stable so I don't have to tune much. Besides...

The perfect strings...have you found yours?

My favorite is Fender Nylons. On my bass you can get a pretty good representation of a double bass sound, with the right amp. They're definitely finger played strings, they don't take well to the pick, but I've got other basses set up with flat wounds on them if the need arises. I play...

How many frets do *you* need on your 4-string?

I play a 20 fret short scale and that's plenty for me. I've gone above the 16th fret maybe a couple dozen times but it's usually on just a song or three that call for it. I try to live in the first 5 if the song lets me. After all, I play the Bass, not the treble!!

What is your significant other's attitude towards your bass playing?...

I went with hostile, but sometimes it's almost as good as indifferent. I was invited to sing for a band just out of highschool, but she said, "Do you want to play music or be married to me?". We weren't married yet, but I took married. That was 46 years ago and not much has changed. She puts...

How do you EQ your P bass

I run my EQ mostly flat all the way across, it's a GK 2-10. I play a Madeira, made by Guild in the eaarly 70s, and it's got a pair of Humbuckers one at the neck one at the bridge, so I can get almost any tone I want by adjusting my bass. Neck is pretty bright, bridge is more boomy. I can throw...

Poll: what kind of music do you play?

Older Rock, Older Country, Older Blues and Older Oldies. Ya see a theme here? I'll play anything if it pays well, and I don't have to like it. It doesn't have to pay 'real well'. And I like most everything. I'm rambling aren't I?
