I personally don't like being told what equipment to use, but I also only own 4 basses, and I do understand the desire for consistency. I don't think three is too bad. It's definitely better than one. I've played entire sets on one bass before, but I do like to mix in the others when I can.

I own two fours (one acoustic, one electric) and a five. I play the five every day, and I only use the fours for acoustic songs or when a song is significantly easier on a four string in tunings like Drop C# or Drop C.
