I always play direct into the system. As long as the venue has decent monitors then you should be fine. It's pretty great, all I have to bring to shows are my bass and a cable and I'm set.

I use a cloth mute. That might be a good starting place if you just want to try something out. They are extremely easy to put in, and I think it does a great job.

Um, why would the guy from Modest Mouse want a bad bass player in his band? I' m sure he wants his band to sound good, Cera probably auditioned and played fine. Plus, he seems like a nice guy to have in a band.
