Fender American Ultra II series is here

The Fender site says "pearloid" which is a celluloid plastic laminate.

Fender American Ultra II series is here

Been away from basses a while but this got my attention. Evening up outputs from passive and active modes is a good move if you're going to have a push/pull knob - those things are easily knocked. Quarter sawn is a pricey addition but the lack of blocks is a shame. Mid switch sounds okay and the...

Can I just take my J bass to a gig and leave the P behind

Totally understand. I have an Ultra P which has a very fat J pickup so it would be my first choice but I'd still bring the Jazz just because it's fun!!

"AI" in the arts (especially the musical ones)

I can’t see AI doing more damage than the mp3 or streaming or sampling. Even the DJ has done as much damage as any AI composer could. The internet killed high street shopping so there’s less and less town to go into for the day that would often end with a gig in a pub. I think visual artists in...

When is the Precision the wrong tool for the job?

    When you’re painting your house!

Late to the Aguilar Party (Tone Hammer 500 Content)

Didn’t get the gold but.. found a bass I used to own but was stolen. When I tried this same model in a shop I cried and thought "got to get this again". Then I tried it on the same amp I have at home. It sounded terrible. The first amp I tried it on was the tone hammer (they didn’t have the gold...

    Why 34" scale?

Read the same so I guess Leo went for a certain sound. Can't get the same fatness out of my 35" bass and less than 34" gets you a very different kind of fat to my ear. Guess no one really argued with him as alternatives aren't as readily in supply.

How Much Do You Think A Well Made Professional Level Instrument Should Cost In Today's World?

If you’re running a business as a musician there’s little point buying something that soaks up your profit. There are so many stories of rock gods on tour keeping their failing basses going with tape and bits of wire or picking up a bass in a pawn shop. I don’t think Fenders profits come from...

Curious what you all think (pickguard color poll)

Clear! But the white looks really good!

High mass vs low mass bridge

All I know is too many amazing records have been made with low mass bridges on the bass for anyone to talk about worse or better. All my bases are premium with high mass but I played a 65 fender recently that put all of them in the shade.

    I'm outta GAS!

I actually bought an amp today with NO GAS, just an objective decision to upgrade something as it has been creeping towards conking out for a while and I happen to have the money. It was a Tone Hammer 500 and I'm still not over excited but my Precision has never sounded better, it's surprisingly...

Do older basses sound significantly better?

So I've been a Fender Ultra Precision fan for a while thinking the Precision purists were just being fanatical and dumbing down the rest of us. I've played C.S stuff and thought they were okay but, for one reason or another, not worth the fuss in my opinion. Yesterday I played a £9000 1965...

Basses you would buy if you could justify the cost

If I could justify it I’d have them all. Starting with the Factor bass, followed by the Marvel themed Ritter, couple of Foderas and a Wal. Mattison and an Alembic would make an appearance next to a Ken Smith. Status would also have to be there. But that would be all.

I will never buy another "active-only" bass

Gotta say my Spector has never let me down. Took me a while after buying a fender to work out what the big deal was with passive.
