What do you mean by " I chord and IV chord" what are those? I hate sounding really new and stupid to bass and all that, but I've been playing for years, just learned it in a different learning process than most who take private lessons and such. so I don't have this knowledge

also doing finger tip push ups will help strengthen your hands/wrists. which now causes my left hand to cramp up less often to never

you might be pressing a little TOO hard on your strings. it might be because you feel the need to do so because your action is high (action pretty much is how far off the strings are from the fret board). if this is the case then maybe setting your action a little lower and getting used to it...
