Theatrical Live Shows: What are your thoughts?

I'm a firm believer in that you stop being just a musician and take on the added role as an entertainer as soon as there is a crowd. That said, when you introduce 'theater' to the extent you're attempting...are you looking at the shock factor or are you looking to tell a story regardless of how...

    Your most embarrasing stage moment......

I've flat busted my ass slipping off of a drum riser, I've wondered where that horrible smell was coming from to turn around and see my open instrument case on fire from a pyro.... ...but there is nothing like a big open bass string plucking to open a set on the count of two, especially when...

    The Gig Swap Thread

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is just getting off the ground in Columbia, SC. We finally played our first show over this past weekend after almost 2 years of working to put it all together. If this thing gains enough traction locally over the next few months, we would be willing to explore...

"Check In" here before and after your gigs, set 3 - everyone's drunk now!

The first show of this project went off well enough. The venue had a small stage and we had too much gear. The stage created low end reverb like I've never heard before....it sounded like we were riding a locomotive through a mountain tunnel on stage, but thankfully the FOH sound was good...

"Check In" here before and after your gigs, set 3 - everyone's drunk now!

Wow...I have a gig tonight that is three days short of a two year layoff. It's a new project with a different vibe than anything most of the members have been a part of before....so we're all really curious how this will play out. It's a bit unconventional for modern rock as we slip in hints of...

Please check out our Facebook page - and POST YOURS!

I've been been working on a project for quite a while...but we finally have all the right players, are working the final mixes for our EP, have a set is locked down, and we're scheduled to perform our first shows in the coming months. I'm not sure which genre we would fit in. Rock, Prog, Alt...a...

    Dressing Alike, Yuk!!!

When gigging regularly I try to have about 3-4 'show' outfits that I try to rotate/mix and match.

    Dressing Alike, Yuk!!!

I've always had the mindset that once you leave the studio, garage, or whatever rehearsal space you have and get on a stage in front of an audience...you stop being just a musician and have to become an entertainer. Dressing the part and somehow looking more impressive than the audience is just...

Band wants to add 3rd guitarist

I'm not sure if it's the case, but if your drummer is pounding a straight 4/4 behind a twin lead, it'll likely sound thin no matter what you do as a bassist. Drums can really fill up a ton of space, but I'm guessing you guys wouldn't want a drum solo behind the lead. He might be able to...

    "Are you good?"

People seem to think so as I get more unsolicited complements that I'd expect...but I know better. There are just way too many players out there who would drink my milkshake for me to consider myself anything but average.

Gig stamina - both in terms of playing and movement

Physically pace yourselves because it's no different than any other exercise. I'm a firm believer that people in general go to "see" a show and not "hear" a show, but you don't need to spend all you have on the first couple songs. Hand cramping has been an issue with me in the past, but...

i think i'm becoming the ***hole

I gladly wear the black hat in my band, then again everyone in the project will put it on occasionally. We all understand that if one is critiquing another, it's not personal and it's not because they are a horrible musician, it's just because we feel they should approach something differently...

    Need help remembering an artist...

I'm turning to the talkbass community for some help with this as I know we have a super diverse group and someone will likely point me in the right direction. There is an 'indi' group, I believe from the UK, that is fronted by a black male vocalist with a really cool voice. They have a...

Amateur musicians working with a producer

The best piece of advice I can give for anyone working with a 'producer' is not to be too attached to the way a song was written. If they suggest a change to a note or arraignment...be willing to explore it and see how it goes. You have to remember that a good producer is hearing your songs...
