    Are Class D's Disposable?

I've had my Aguilar tone hammer 500 for about 6 years now, played everything from bedroom jams to fully maxed out into an 8x10 with zero issues. My vintage v4b seems to need repair every year, sometimes every two years. I'm certain when something eventually goes wrong with my TH500 Aguilar will...

Aguillar Tone Hammer / Microtubes 500-v2

I have a '70s V4B and a Tonehammer 500. The V4B sounds great. The TH500 also sounds great, requires zero maintenance, and weighs 1/10 as much so it's hard to argue with if I'm playing anything that involves moving gear. It definitely has a little baked in tone and the EQ is versatile, but not...

Looking for versatile, mid-sized cabs to complement a Tonehammer 500 and V4b

Hi there, on a search for a new cab. I live in a rural area in the inner mountain west so I can't pop down to the music store and try a bunch of stuff out. Currently own a Warwick Thumb and fretless Ken Smith Designs Jazz bass, going into an Aggie TH500 or vintage Ampeg V4B, depending on my...

    Massive amp/cab at practice volume?

I've found that there's quite a difference in my EQ between a good bedroom tone and a good loud tone, and different still to cut through the mix with a band. Don't be afraid to turn the EQ knobs, but ultimately like other posters have said that's just too much cab. I got a PJB double Four for...

Does anyone practice with their amp without their bass? :)

Absolutely, fundamentals are critical. I like to put on a metronome and practice taking my tube amp from off, to standby, to on with an even tempo. I also practice turning my knobs to the metronome as well.

    Really really small amp!

Phil Jones Bass Double-Four is what you seek.

    Anyone ever run outa gas?

I feel pretty solid where I'm at, I don't need anything else. Ken Smith Designs fretless Jazz bass, Warwick Corvette (fretted), Phil Jones Double Four practice amp, a Tonehammer 500 and vintage Ampeg V4b into an Epifani PS115 cab. I wanna try some other cabs out like Bergs and Acmes, a P bass...

Help with an old ampeg v4b

Small jolt from touching the metal sounds like a failed death cap which is a somewhat typical failure for the old V4Bs, and for sure needs to go to a qualified tech. Probably also a few other issues like others have said. Flyback diodes, fuses, random shorts, etc

How would you describe/achieve John Mcvie's tone on Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance?"

I agree completely, he nails it. I have played around with my EQ, I can emphasize what growl I have but it's still not as present as it is in his tone. Toying with upgrading the pickups in my thumb, I'm just not getting the tone everyone raves about out of the MECs.

    Are these still available?

How would you describe/achieve John Mcvie's tone on Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance?"

Holy cow it's just so good. I'm also still learning to define a lot of tone terminology (I saw someone describe a "boxy" bass tone the other day? *** is that?) so I figured this would be a good exercise for me. It sounds pretty punchy in the low mids with good bass but still really defined, and...

I've already got the main effects pedals? What else do I need

I think a reverb pedal is great to have a subtle always on effect, or turn it up to make things interesting. It does get muddy if you don't set your knobs right though. An envelope filter would be fun too, Waiting for the right price on a Q tron + right now.

    Amateur mods on professional basses

Unfortunately I don't have pics but in 8th grade I put a p bass neck on my $100 rogue starter pack bass, ruining the intonation. Then I drilled thru the pots trying to add LEDs in the center of the knobs. Spoilers: this did not work. I'd call my 8th grade craftsmanship pretty damn amateur, but...

Why spend money on an old tube amp when new class D amps are cheap?

Why would anyone own a '72 Ford mustang when a 1998 Honda civic is so cheap? It ain't all about practicality. There's something about big iron that just gets me. I do own a tone hammer 500 which is my main amp but damn I love my vintage v4b.
