Anyone ever run outa gas?

Seems like every time I enter a GC, my gas gets killed immediately. Probably because they don’t have anything more interesting than the basses I already have, and what they do have is set up so horribly that I can barely play them.
However, I would like to own just one more bass; a Stingray5-like instrument which I believe I will put together myself....yes, another parts bass, but it seems that’s the only way I can get what I really want without spending an arm and a leg.

I feel pretty solid where I'm at, I don't need anything else. Ken Smith Designs fretless Jazz bass, Warwick Corvette (fretted), Phil Jones Double Four practice amp, a Tonehammer 500 and vintage Ampeg V4b into an Epifani PS115 cab.

I wanna try some other cabs out like Bergs and Acmes, a P bass would be cool and so would a PJ but ultimately I have a solid setup. Doesn't hurt that I live in a small apt so I don't really have room for an 8x10 fridge or anything huge

I ran out of gas in my 1968 Willys Jeep. Gas gauge was broken. That's the only time, thankfully.

As to GAS, I go in spurts. I'll be totally GAS free for a while then get the itch to improve / adjust something. Or my gigging situation changes and some equipment shifts are in order.

Well it gets to the point where I have everything I want.

2 Fender American Pro 5 string.

4 Gallien Krueger Heads. 5 Gallien Krueger Cabs. 1 210 and 4 410s. The combinations are endless.

But the last piece of the puzzle came in the form of a "Mike Lull" M5V.

I got that and felt whole at last.

I’m sure this has been covered before but I find myself totally satisfied with my gear.

Over satisfied even.

4 wonderful amp heads. 5

And 3 of the best Basses I’ve ever owned.

I can’t find any instrument or amplification that interest me. But oh how I love to use what I got.

Anyone else finding they have arrived at gear heaven?
From a later in life perspective:
The various amplifier and speaker configurations took a lifetime of experience with the criteria properly represented by the manufacturer’s specifications and my divergent avenues of expression. As a soloist with extended range bass and reliance upon either pre-recorded or e-percussion, I needed a full-range system, stereo. It took years and managed funds to arrive to today’s (and the last several years) backline. It is a “lock”.

For my mono, bass support, ensemble, properly colored system, it still is “old school”. Albeit, a re-furbed SWR Henry 8x8, an SWR Bass 350 and a separate pedalboard for use with my vintage 4 string Ibanez RB950 and my Custom Conklin 7.

Given the current uncertainties of the live music scene here, it is a waiting game. I would have to guess that anything is possible...

Currently working on recording my extended range material...ala live format. There are possible other than solo possibilities, but at my age, holding my breath continues to be practice as to how long I can hold my breath.

My other truth is that I'm too picky for G.A.S. now, because I say NO to:

pickguards
more than 4 strings
blacked out pickups (pole pieces or rails must be exposed)
active basses w/o a REAL passive/active switch (must be able to function w/o a battery)

related to one another, also NO:
4-inline headstocks
higher mass than 3,500 Grams
neck-dive

It's tough to find a low-mass instrument w/o neck-dive, but having a 2x2 headstock helps.

another tough one is finding a slim neck that's stiff, so it will need to be reinforced with Graphite or Titanium, unless I can try before I buy

For a while I went through trial & error trying to find a 2nd bass, but nothing could compare to my SR1800E, even a G&L L-2000 (didn't like the 4-inline headstock, fretboard radius, neck thickness, & weight).
Ironically, I put together a parts-bass from parts of the cheapest Ibanez Soundgear line, & it's much more valuable to me than what it cost. (7 lbs.)

You have good taste Joel ;)

I've actually been trying to build up gas but it's not working. My PJ is everything I've ever wanted. I bought it to retire my Spector 5 string as it was too heavy but being on the lighter bass has helped my shoulder recover a lot. To be honest I don't find other 5 strings very inspiring so I guess I'm keeping it which means no gas. Pedal board was complete months ago and my gear is Markbass. Feel like I've given up smoking. I know it's good for me but it's not really...

You don't have one of these. Me neither for another week. But, it'll be together by Christmas. Mines getting cut for a big single in the j neck spot, and a music man in the bridge. Gonna be dope!View attachment 4029764
looks like Rosser body , my 90s Fernandes TEB-1 tele bass is really cool but wouldn't mind getting a lighter body like this and building a partscaster Tele bass ....hmmmm

I found myself in sound-heaven, but not in "easy back" heaven. I need to get a DNA-800 amp to have both sound heaven and easy- back heaven. My sound heaven comes from my Eden WT500/800 (36-lbs in its rack) into either my DNS-210 cab (by DNA) or my DNS-410 cab. I run my amp bridged at 8 ohms into either of them. The 210 will handle 700 watts rms and I could drive it to its max SPL of 134db with my amp. I use it for all indoor locations.

For outdoors and festivals I use my DNS410 which will handle 1400 watts. I can drive it just a hair over 134db with my amp and it'll do 137db with a 1400-watt amp. I typically run my master at 9:30 to 10 o'clock indoors with the 210 and 9:30 with the 410. Outdoors, depending upon how wide open everything is, I can turn my master up to just a skosh over 10 o'clock (outdoor festivals) into my 410 before being told to turn down.

Both of these cabs are really loud and I can't even imagine driving them to SPL's that high as that is past the point of pain and incurs immediate and permanent hearing damage at those levels. Just suffice to say that I never fear being drowned out by double Marshall stacks and I have no need to haul around an 810. Plus they are the clearest most articulate cabs I have ever heard and they have a very tight and low bottom end. So I don't really need any cabs.

I also have an Eden TN226 class-D amp (225-watts and weighs 4.7-lbs.), which is why I really want to get the DNA one (800-watts). I use that TN226 amp along with an Eden EX-112 4 ohm cab for small venues like the brew pub where we typically played about 40 times a year before they went out of business due to the Covid-19 restrictions. It was nice to put the amp in its shoulder bag over my shoulder, grab the cab with one hand and my bass with the other. Made load-in and out very easy.

The 800-watt DNA amp weighs just 4.8-lbs. and although I can't grab either of the other cabs with one hand, the DNA-800 will go over my shoulder in a shoulder bag, once we start gigging again. In the interest of continuing domestic tranquility, I only use gig money to buy my gear.

I've been playing the same '82 Jazz Bass (MIA, passive, in Olympic White with maple neck) since I bought it in 1985 and have no desire for another 4 string. It's my dream bass as it has the same neck shape, profile, and radius as my 1965 Jazz did that I bought in 1966 (was stolen in 1976). It has great sustain and I can make it growl pretty easily if I want to. I just really enjoy playing it.

I have a decent albeit inexpensive 5-string that sounds good, but not as good as my Jazz. If I had a great need for a 5-string, maybe I would have GAS for a better one. But since I only played the one I have about 3 times last year, I don't really need one and don't have GAS for a better one.

So I'm pretty lucky in that I have all that I need to get "my sound" at any volume level that I desire, and I'm very happy with my gear. I had everything I wanted back in 1971 when I was touring, but it was all stolen in 1976 and it wasn't until 2019 that I really had everything I needed again to cover any situation or venue, small, medium, large, or festival size. Guess you could say I'm a "happy camper" too.
