My first bass was a Peavey G-Bass that I got for $300 new (old stock). It was 7 years ago & the only bass I would never sell. Just simply amazing.

Honestly, I would go to a local music store and figure out which basses feel the best (obviously you can change out hardware). I know for me, if I had $450 or so to buy a 4-string, I would find a used MIM P-Bass and change out the pick-up.
