Tech 21 dUg Pinnick DP-3X Signature Pedal!

My first gig coming up tonight with the one I just received wed. At home using the DI through my small mixer interface and then headphones out sounds great. I found a clean tone with a hint of dirt that is fat in the mix. I use IEM's only with this gig (modern country) and I am sure it will work great. I love the deepish clean low end.

I use it in a ZZTop Tribute Band and I use a lot of gain w/ the Mid shift button out, Mids Cranked and the Highs cut way back.
I use the Bass's Tone and Volume control to Tame it as needed for the particular song and being a 3 piece I can open up both Tone and Volume for filling up the Mix during guitar solo's.
I love it.
It worked great! Bit of a learning curve in the first set...this was a casino gig with no sound check (mixer settings saved from last time). I had to bring the bass back to almost noon and add some mids up to 2 o’clock. Once dialed in I smiled all night. Plus, fan reports said the bass sounded killer out front. I used my Radial Bassbone straight DI tone the last time I played this venue, so I had to also cut the bass boost on my iem pack.
Btw, I have been listening to King’s X and KXM all week-the dUg tone invades modern country 
The best thing about this pedal is it cuts out all the tap dancing - I can switch between a phat low end sound and a cutting grind just using my fingers, without having to step on distortion pedals. It works so well in a hard rock mix that I wish I could go back and re-record stuff with it!

Yeah, had the X7 for a while - I found I spent most of the time with the low pass around 200hz and high pass maxed - incidentally pretty much just what the DP3X does. I prefer the Tech 21 dirt tones, the X7 sounding far less refined and crunchy. X7 was much quieter at higher gains and EQ was slightly more flexible. However, I feel I could actually get more varied feels/tones/flavours out of the DP3X whereas the X7 was very hard to move out of the Darkglass camp.
The way I was trying to use them (fat clean always on with sweet grit when you dig in) the DP3X was far better at it.
Same here. The X7's distortion has a harshness about it that I couldn't tame. Now if I was playing in a very dark death core band, I'd have kept it. I was hopeful it would expand on what the dUg did but, I kinda knew within 20 minutes of playing around with it that it wasn't going to be useful to me. I did unbox it a few more times and spent hours with it but, always got frustrated with it.
The Sansamp tube amp simulation in the dug and other Tech 21 products just rules in my book.
Even without the ability to vary the Low & High Pass filters of the dUg, I can get the tones I love from it.
Could you imagine a programmable dUg with variable Low and High Pass filters, that would be heaven for me. Then again I'd probably end up with the filters adjusted like the dUg is set, lol.

In a rock setting, the DP-3X was perfect for me. But I could not get enough Mids for other styles, so now I‘m waiting for the small Geddy Lee version. I‘m a little disappointed that they did not put it in the massively convenient form factor of the DP-3X, with Tuner and Cab Sim XLR.
Yep, I want to try the new YYZ Geddel into the dUg clean for D.I..
That's what I was hoping for!! I even sent my mockups to Dale Krevens and at NAMM she told me she liked them, but that's just not the direction they were going.

That pedal was an eye-opener for me. So much that I convinced a german engineer to build a Hi and Lo Channel Looper with HPF and LPF so I can experiment with compression and frequencies even more!
This is a working prototype. Waiting for a new version with an aditional Full Range insert channel.

I'm thinking about getting this pedal (as an upgrade to my Behringer BDI21). I'm between this, the 3-channel BDDI and the TC SpectraDrive. I really like the BDDI tone/colouration (which I get from my BDI21 currently). The Dug has comp and tuner so that's 2 pedals I can drop off my board (and possibly drive too).
I play in 2 bands currently. Mostly classic and modern rock covers. P-bass finger-style and pick (never slap).
Unfortunately I can't try it out in store so I have some questions for current owners. And sorry if they've been covered and I missed it.
1. What is the 'clean' preamp comparable to? A clean BDDI, VT, or it's own thing entirely? (I like a deep tubey tone that breaks up when you dig in. Think SVT with the Ultra low on.)
2. How versatile is the drive? Can it do more than the clanky metal tone?
3. Does it sit well with other pedals in front? I have a Superfuzz clone and a Boss ODB-3 I really like using. They sound even better before the BDI21.

The dUg clean has a lot of low end, is its own thing compared to the others IMO and forms the core of the drive tone.
When you engage the drive, yes of course it can be ‘harsh’ but the tone knob on your bass is your friend here.
Dial in your gritty drive tone how you like, if you want more of a ‘tube’ type tone what you do is roll the tone off till you get it, it cures the Highs.

1. I use the pedal with both channels on or bypassed entirely, so I'm not particularly qualified to speak about the clean channel.
2. The dUg pedal is always colored to some extent (as most dirt pedals are, including the BDDI), but it can DEFINITELY do more than "dUgTone", i.e. heavy scoop and clank. I often use it for relatively conventional dirt tones... that is, tones appropriate for pop, blues, country, very classic rock and oldies, etc. And as Cuzzie said, you can use the passive tone control on your bass to go from clank to conventional. But if you don't need clank at all, you can dial it out of the pedal.
3. Sure 'nuff. I've stacked other pedals in front of the dUg with excellent results. Examples: Reiner Gasoline, Damnation Audio MBD-1, Dunwich ODB.
