Just received a couple of photos on the progress of the SG EB-0 mini bass (22.8" scale) being made by Brian Fanner in Cape Town, South Africa.

Sounds like the scale length or slotting of the frets has been botched from the factory. Without a bridge with adjustable saddles, I don't see how you could fix the former. I could possibly have something to do with your choice of strings (if they "bend" too much when you fret them). Was the problem there before you installed them?I have a question for you connoisseurs of the sub-short. I have a Mahalo MEB-1 (fretted) that I've put the new Gallistrings/Kala flatwounds on. The sound great, but the intonation is off. At the 12th fret, all strings are about 1/8 step too high in pitch. What options to I have to fix this, except going fretless?

Hmmm.Thanks! Moving the bridge back seems like the logic thing to do, right? There is some space to work with there, before the through-body holes. I guess it doesn't hurt if there is a bit more angle to the strings, over the saddle.
The hardest part will be to decide how far back it needs to go. I'll take the bridge off and see if I can fixate it temporarily, with strings on, to try it out.

Depends on the two angles the strings make at either side of the saddle, I guess: if they're identical or Link Removed the bridge stays put; if the neckward one is much shallower than the one toward the string anchoring, the bridge may want to move forward.Wouldn't an easy option be - to simply not glue the bridge plate on? There is enough string pressure to hold it in place. Much more than enough.
I strongly agree. Flat-top acoustic guitars with floating bridges used to be common in my neck of the woods, and could be easily strung with either nylon or steel strings with a relatively quick bridge scootover; the mighty dreadnought (and the conventional, fixed-bridge classical) ended up all but replacing them eventually.The classical instrumental world counts on this. I always wondered why the same concept wasn't used on acoustic guitars and basses.
I always wanted to experiment with using a violin/hofner bass replacement bridge. It is height adjustable, has some limited but legit intonation adjustment capability, and the base is wood.
