How to Succeed as an Original Band

This is why we always went with the approach of staying out of all original clubs. We had the ability to bring in $1000.00 a night or more once we established a following. We still played at least an hours worth of originals a night, sandwiched between similar covers. We played an acoustic set...

How to Succeed as an Original Band

This is probably the most common cause of band failure. If you are all working towards a different end only one of you has a chance to succeed, and ii isn't a good one because your band is not working towards that.

How to Succeed as an Original Band

We went with the approach of playing both covers and originals. We had a good coverband following while we crafted our sound, and always included at least 2 originals a set. This was scawfed at by many all original bands, but we would sell 50 cds at new venues, versus the original bands playing...

Show me your homemade or moded straps!

No pictures, but I got to a gig once, and no strap. After a moment of panic, I reached for the old reliable. Duct tape, used a whole role, but made a strap that though uncomfortable was effective enough to last me the night. I now however have an extra in almost every case of cords we own.

    Advice For A Friend/Purpose of a Coverband

I've played with the exact same lineup for over 15 years. We cut our teeth as a cover band while writing original music. We then moved to a good mix of both so we could generate cash, and make fans. Lets face it at least here in the midwest original bars are usually filled with mostly other...

How many times would you clean a set of roundswounds before buying a new set?

The guitar is in good shape, no burs though I have had that issue on other instruments. I use a medium light string, I prefer the tone, but when I get carried away they are small enough to pop. The issue is strictly a technic issue, but I play the way I play. Usually happens when playing...

    Bass abuse

I don't intentionally abuse my instrument, I have used the same bass exclusively for over 15 years now. It show the years for sure, but it is mechanically sound and gets repaired if needed. There are many spots on the neck that have the paint worn thin, there is a gauge mark above my pickup from...

How many times would you clean a set of roundswounds before buying a new set?

24 hours playing time. 3 weekends of 2 a night gigs. I play pretty heavy handed. I've watched many a bass player break strings, the bass player from the Doobie Bros. busted 3 the night I saw them.

    REO Speedwagon

I did a show with them in the late 90's. Hung out with the bass players tech while they did their show. Great bass player, really knew how to lay it down.

How many times would you clean a set of roundswounds before buying a new set?

I change mine after about 24 hours playing time. If I don't I end up breaking them. If it is a high profile, and paying gig I'll go with new each show. My practice guitars around the house haven't been changed in several years.

    Most essential bass(es) to own

Gibson Les Paul, with active Bartolini's. Holds tune like no other, and nasty growl that I love.

Thats unusual. I have the Ampeg isovent, with the 2 bass speakers mounted face to face and wired out of phase. They do like to mess around at ampeg.

    Gibson Thunderbird

I've thought about selling my old gretsch country gentleman, and buying a more user friendly instrument as a backup. I play a Gibson lpb3 bass regularly, but am thinking of picking up a lighter backup. The thunderbird is one instrument I am considering if I do. I have only plyed one once sitting...

    Define “Band”.

I just saw a band a couple of weeks ago. a drummer and a guitar player. They followed a nine piece band and held their own quite well. That being said I don't have alot of use for bands without bass players.
