New guitar and bass pro shop near Toronto Ontario

The website lists all of the manufacturers he carries, and many of them make bass equipment like Rickenbacker and Phil Jones, so I would not look at store pictures of just guitar gear as any real guide post. Obviously, I started the thread because he has some excellent looking basses, and bass...

New guitar and bass pro shop near Toronto Ontario

There is a new guitar and bass pro shop just outside Bethany Ontario, near Peterborough, or rather about an hour from Toronto. Stellar looking shop, with slews of guitars, basses, and amps, like Rickenbacker, Deusenberg, Phil Jones, etc. They are in an unusual location, but make no mistake...

Hofner HA-B03 acoustic bass-Anyone here own one?

I have one. I have had it for a while now. I have only played perhaps two acoustic basses, so I don't have a lot to compare it to. I am just curious if there are any other owners out there, and what your thoughts are on it.

    Tone-glue

Actually, I was a Gibson man for the first 25 years of playing, so I would still quite like your 58 LP musiclogic. Somewhere between our diametrically opposed opinions is the truth. I think you misread something in what I wrote, because I did not prove any point of yours. With Strat's (you...

    Tone-glue

Hmmm... Maybe basses, but certainly not solidbody guitars. I am a bit of a Stratocaster aficionado, and have about a dozen at last count. One can argue the merits of the term tonewood, but that some of my Strats sound better, worse, or different than others due to the body woods and mass is...

    Tone-glue

One does have to first make a distinction between solid body amplified and unamplified instruments. I may have erred in introducing acoustical instruments here, but I just wanted to point out that materials and glues are important in some types of instrument making. I did say that basses may be...

    Tone-glue

I like your avatar. Actually, I know a number of high end "classical" instrument makers, both violin and guitar. Of course the primary reason for using hide glue is indeed reversibility, but there is conjecture among many that tone may also be a factor, and why not. Glue is used to assemble...

    Tone-glue

It may be that basses -and the frequency range they represent- are not as sensitive to variations in materials, but it is worth noting that in other instruments (violins and guitars in particular) wood type is a critical factor, and so is glue type. In violins, there is nothing to hype, as...

Does anyone here ever use a capo?

My main purpose for (occasionally) using a capo would be to more easily accompany my guitar for recording, when I use a capo on it. I tune the bass the same way, and so the capo helps me fit in better. I am merely a guitar player who labors to make the bass work, although that might change as I...

    Some setup specs needed.

I would like to have some fresh setup values for bass. It seems that there is much less information on the internet in this regard than for guitar. The bass in question is 34" scale, with 50 70 90 110's, with the E and A tuned down a step, for most of my playing. I only play with my fingers...

Does anyone here ever use a capo?

Yes, naive question(s) I know. And to think I have been playing guitar for decades, but rarely in a band, or with a real bassist. Now I am teaching myself to play, so I can record a bit. If so, any preference for model?

    O.K. thanks.

    Bending strings?

Is string bending a bona fide technique on fretted bass?

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

Hmmm... I thought Rotosound was the largest bass string maker (hence my arguably qualifier) if we simply define largest as the company who has more bass strings on more basses in the world, but I suspect I am about to be corrected :)

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

I don't mind the new tensions, just the buzz. I did tighten the truss, and the relief is good. I also just made a discovery (yes, I know I am a bit slow out of the gate with this bass stuff). Careful listening indicates the buzzing is virtually gone when I fret the strings. That would seem to...

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

Well, I know I have some work to do in finding the right combo, but I was in L&M today, and picked up a set of Rotobass nickel 50 70 90 110, just to jump into something to get my feet wet, and I just finished installing them. I like the feel and the tone quite a bit, but the 90 and 110 tuned...

    ADA MP-1 for bass?

Thanks for the replies. I can see the advantage of some of the extra effects of the MB-1. Strange thing about compression, when I was doing a bit of testing just using headphones and toggling through the stock settings, I would swear some of them breathed and pumped as if there was significant...

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

Very helpful information. Thanks, and thanks to everyone else too. I am definitely better armed now to get the right set for me. I am going to go 45 65 for sure, since I never tune down the top, and I'll split the difference on the bottom two.

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

Near Toronto Ontario. Long and Mcquade is my usual retailer for music stuff. Thanks for the new replies. Custom sets are an option, but admittedly, I would like the simplicity of something off the shelf, if possible. After hours of checking, I think I have narrowed it down to two half decent...

Thought I would bump this once, for another run at new readers.

    ADA MP-1 for bass?

Buying a new basspreamp for direct recording is not in the cards right now, but I do have an ADA MP-1 guitar preamp. I think the ADA MB-1 is considered a decent bass preamp, and I was wondering if there is anyone here actually using an MP-1. I do know that there are some differences, like the...

Trick question: Any "Rotobass" string users here?

It seems Rotosound indeed makes a nickel wound string in a gauge I want, called Rotobass RB50 (50 70 90 110). It's a trick question because I cannot find any decent reviews on these strings. These are unsilked, and thus cheaper than the Swingbass RS series, but Rotosound was not quite clear...

What kind of strings where you guys using in the 70's?

Did swing 66 come in optional nickel wind back then? If not, roughly when was nickel wound introduced? Is it fair to say that when people think of the quintessential bass string, they mean Swing 66 in stainless? I cannot understand why they do not make a 50 70 85 110 set in nickel, since they...

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

I could probably open up a much larger selection for myself, if I was able to use a set of 45 65 85 105, tuned down one step on the E and A. I only have this one old set to go by, and I really do not know what they are. Might I be able to get away with these gauges if I was using DR nickel...

That's great info, and a good tip for a foam source. Thanks for the reply.

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

Thanks for the replies. I just did some Talkbass reading on the DDT's, and there might be a concern with them. My bass is 34" scale, and not through body. Apparently, the DDT's may be too long (according to reports), and therefore some of the full thickness might end up on the tuning post...

Question about pickup mounting, jazz and P.

I have done lots of electric guitar work, but I have only ever disassembled the one electric bass I own, a mutt, with a Godin neck, and a somewhat precision copy body. It has one P and one J pickup. It's been years since I worked on it, but I did put in a Bartolini precision pickup and a...

Why am I having a difficult time finding this set of strings?

I play mostly in an open tuning, DGDG, which means the E and the A are tuned down a whole step. My strings are very old, and have a slight rattle when I tune down, so I am in the market for new strings, because I think the core might be separating, thus causing the rattle. Because I tune...

    New member with a question

Thanks for the replies. For me, I am sure it is related to my strong preference for open guitar tunings. If I try to play standard tuning bass over open tuning guitar, it does not go well, but if I play standard tuning guitar, then indeed I use standard bass tuning.

    New member with a question

Hello TalkBass members. This is my first post. I am a long time guitar player who through necessity, has to play bass to record music, since I have no band. I can hold my own with sufficient work on a given song, and I have a healthy respect for the special skills and demands on real bass...
