Modern bassists with a unique style?

Jon Stockman of Karnivool and Justin Chancellor of Tool, depending on how generous we're being with "modern."

To those who don't get, appreciate, or even [gasp] hate Jaco

I respect Jaco's abilities, but his playing and tone really don't do it for me.

"_______ doesn't get enough love around here!"

Jon Stockman of Karnivool. Killer tones and phrasing, but he doesn't get talked about a whole lot on here.

Do any artists use signature models of other artists?

I'm pretty sure I've seen Michael Shumer of Queens of the Stone Age use one of those before. Edit: Here's a video with him using it

Do any artists use signature models of other artists?

    Paul D'amour played a 4001CS on Tool's first album.

Do any artists use signature models of other artists?

IIRC Mark Whatshisface from the Killers uses a GL Jazz, and Martin Mendez of Opeth uses a Marcus Miller Jazz.

So I just listened to Dirt by Alice in Chains...

Definitely one of my favorite "less is more" players. I've always loved the hook on "Rain When I Die".
  12. dabaumtravis

Who's your favorite bassist and why?

Justin Chancellor of Tool. He does a good job locking in with some utterly bizarre drum rhythms, and uses effects in creative ways. Geddy Lee is a close second, his phrasing and talent is always on point.

Yoko Ono: "John Lennon had a desire to sleep with men"

Uhh, cool I guess... doesn't change my opinion of him or his music much, but I guess it's nice to know.

Songs with Multiple Time Signatures and Tempos?

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Here's the tab I used when I first tried to learn the song and here's a bass cover/scrolling tab video that should help you put some of the trickier bits in context

Songs with Multiple Time Signatures and Tempos?

"Schism" by Tool is practically the Freebird of time signature changes.

Tool and other prog metal acts would be my nomination.

    Confessions

I'm not a big fan of P-basses (Great tones, but I don't like the body shape or the neck) I don't like Jaco's music or bass tone I actually like slap bass (apparently that's a controversial opinion in these parts) Lead bass playing can be cool sometimes

If I Like Rush and Tool, then who else may I like?

+1 on Queens of the Stone Age, but if you're gonna show someone "I Appear Missing," it should always be this version: Anyways, I'm suprised no one's Intronaut yet. My favorite song of theirs: A cool instrumental featuring Justin Chancellor on bass

    Kanye

Honestly, if you guys hate him so much, just ignore him. Kanye thrives on negative attention, and he loves rustling people's jimmies more than almost anything else in the world. A bunch of dudes ranting on the internet about how "terrible" he is won't do diddly-squat.

    Martin Mendez

The bass in Ghost of Perdition is mixed pretty low, but there's an isolated track from Guitar Hero floating around somewhere. WRT your question, I suppose that could play a part in his popularity, since there are so many metal bassists that can play circles around him, but I happen to like him...
  29. dabaumtravis

    Martin Mendez

For some of their heavier stuff, give "Harlequin Forest" and "Ghost of Perdition" from Ghost Reveries and "Bleak," "The Leper Affinity," and "The Drapery Falls" off Blackwater Park a listen. Mendez's style is pretty similar to the work on Damnation, but he's not quite as audible sadly.
  30. dabaumtravis

    Martin Mendez

Give a listen to Damnation, especially the songs "Ending Credits," "To Rid the Disease," and "In My Time of Need." Nothing too complex, but he's up in the mix and has some nice grooves and subtle melodies. Edit: Fair warning: Damnation's not really a "metal" album, it's more moody prog.
