I use RayoVac rechargable batteries in my wireless mouse and my TV remotes. I also use them in my Vox headphone amp and never had a problem with noise. As far as an active bass is concerned, because they tend to last a long time, I would use Energizers or Duracell. ;)

I like the Squire CV 60s PBass. I think is would be an ideal starter bass and would easily play any genre. As for callouses on the fingers, one way to ease that is to have it strung with light gauge flats or chromes. Good luck.;)

A nice affordable bass would be a Squire CV60s PBass strung with flats. It is under $600 and will definitely do the job. Worth a look. ;)

The B52s used synth bass as did Gary Numan on some songs. Gary Wright used synth bass on his songs and he was from the 70s. I think you would do well with an 80s New Wave/Synth Pop type band. Learn full keys as well. Good luck.;)
