Making my own luminescent side dots.

Today's activity: Cutting silicone "french fries" into tiny little cubes to reuse in the next molds.

Making my own luminescent side dots.

At this point, I only have a soft core with the UV cured 1 part resin (that's why I switched to the 2 parts, to see if I can improve the ratio). I think that not only the more powder I put in, the more opaque the material becomes, therefore blocking more UV rays but the powder itself absorbs...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

Finding out that perfect ratio is what I am most focused on right now. For the UV resin, with my setup and materials, it is somewhere between 25% and 30%. At 25% the rods seem perfectly cured, at 30% they are getting noticeably softer, past 30% the center of the rod remains gelatinous. For the 2...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

I was half expecting the powder to settle down at the bottom but it didn't bother me for the exact reason you've stated. The first thing I did was to cut a couple of dots to see if they were cured at the bottom and they were so I guess it's all good. I'm a bit more bothered by the small air...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

The result from yesterday's test batch, it's promising but I need to work on my injection method as many of the dots have a small air bubble down at the base. It's still a work in progress.

Making my own luminescent side dots.

Yeah, I like the little trail, it makes demolding them much easier. The next few days will all be about learning to work with this epoxy and finding the saturation point, for sure. I think the epoxy is ok, it is advertised as food-safe (once cured, of course) BPA and VOC-free. It has no smell...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

So, I've reached the limits of the UV resin, the glow powder was clearly interfering with the curing process the more I added so I had to change to a 2 parts epoxy and adapt my process. Today was the first test with the new epoxy: Now it's just a matter of waiting 24 hours to see the result...

    What's On Your Workbench?

I will update my progress for sure. Also, the list is a good idea. My second mold is curing right now. I should have enough silicone left to make a couple more. About the other shapes and even items, it is clearly a good idea but I don't want to get ahead of myself. Right now I am focused...

    What's On Your Workbench?

To be honest, I am thinking about it. I actually enjoy making them and I like the idea of making it a small business. But it's still a little bit early. If I am to start selling them, I want to make sure I can offer consistent high-quality products first. As a quick update (I'll go into more...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

I do have one of those little lamps but mine is weak, it doesn't work great. The green powder I am using for the "good" dots (final testing before mounting) is made of larger particles and seems to be of much better quality. It charges very well from a simple desk lamp with a 13w warm white LED...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

So that confirms what I was expecting. Also, you made me realize something. Up until now, I saw those "mushroom tops" as pure waste and I discarded them as soon as I removed the rods from the mold but now I understand that they can be used as applicators of sorts so I should probably keep them...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

They are 3mm in diameter by 6mm in length, I think they are suited for just 1 dot per rod but I'm not sure. That's actually one of the things I want to test, to see how big a difference there is in the dot's luminosity according to their length. I would think a 5mm rod would emit more light and...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

Using a needleless syringe to introduce the resin from the bottom of the mold. It's all about being slow and steady. By doing so, the bubbles just float to the surface and the dots come out very uniform in color and luminescence. I'm using UV resin. From my discussions with Bruce, I know that...

Making my own luminescent side dots.

Hey guys, I decided this project should have its own thread seeing that it is moving in the right direction and I am getting pretty close to a functional final product. I started by making my own clear silicone mold. After a few failed attempts I managed to make something close to what I...

    What's On Your Workbench?

I still have a few more tests to do, but I think I am very close to the final product. I need to mount them in a real neck now to see how that goes.

    The Fretless Club (Part IV)

Sorry to hear that. Are you still looking? If you are, take a look at Kitary, they have the Cort B4 Element fretless for about 600€ and a few more basses you can't find on Thomann. They are not as popular as Thomann so you can only return one item every 90 days on their dime, therefore it's...

Hey, what did you end up buying and how do you get along with it? Just curious.

    The CORT Club (Part 2)

9mm is way too much, even 6mm is a lot. I just checked and all my B4 have the neck pickup at between 3mm and 2.75mm from the bottom of the strings. I do not experience any chorus sound with these settings. Your pickups being that far from the strings are at least part of your problem with the...

    The CORT Club (Part 2)

Yes, I do like the preamp in the B4 element. Not the string height, the pickup height. The distance of the pickup to the strings should be around 3mm. Start there and then fine-tune.

    The CORT Club (Part 2)

They are indeed split coils. After I removed the MK-1s from my B4 ASRM I opened them to reuse the caps and I could indeed verify that they are in-line split coils. It's interesting that you don't like them in your ASRM, neither did I so I ended up replacing them with a set of EMG J's. I quite...

    What's On Your Workbench?

It's getting better: I realized that my main problem was the fact that the air couldn't get out of the tiny molds because of the viscosity so I took a syringe, removed the needle from its support, and used it to introduce the resin directly to the bottom of the molds. I push until the air...

    What's On Your Workbench?

My first homemade luminous side dots. It's been quite a struggle but these results are encouraging. The UV resin I'm using right now is quite thick and it's a pain and a half to fill the tiny 3mm/6mm holes without air bubbles. It's a work in progress but I think I'm getting a hang of it.

    The CORT Club (Part 2)

The controls on an amp are generally quite limited as they are only boosting/cutting preset frequencies. A paraEQ pedal allows you to fine-tune your EQ by letting you choose the width and value of the frequencies you want to boost/cut. Something like that: (I love this pedal!) So, if your...

    The CORT Club (Part 2)

It does seem to add low end but going from rounds to flats will change a lot more than just adding some low end. If you like the feel and sound of your strings, maybe try a good paraEQ first, it could solve your problem while keeping the rest unchanged.

    What's On Your Workbench?

Long story short, they're for easy removal of the mold from the support. Long story long, I had a hard time finding steel dowels so I improvised a bit. I found tiny magnets (3mm/6mm) and I used them in the bottom of a metal tea can that has just the right dimensions for this project. I wanted...

    What's On Your Workbench?

Because the Luminlay I received came as a tiny rod (60mm/3mm) I was all set on that format but making them much shorter makes a lot of sense, I can see how this helps avoid air bubbles and makes for better consistency. This all seems pretty straightforward. I have most of what I need, on to...

    What's On Your Workbench?

Hey Bruce. I recently bought some luminlay from Amazon (USA), it seemed easier than ordering directly from Japan. It took forever to arrive and only cost me my firstborn (I'm in Europe)... So I must admit that the idea of making my own custom luminescent dots greatly appeals to me, especially...

    Geezer Butler signature pick ups

I got a GZR P on my Harley Benton PB-20, and I can say that it turned my $100 bass into a $1000 instrument (soundwise, of course). I love it with rounds (Fender Super 7250's) but I really didn't enjoy it with my favorite flats (Fender 9050L), I will revisit it at a later time but I feel these...

    RIP Juan Nelson

I am very late but I guess it's never really too late for a homage. Ben Harper was quite popular when I was a student and I listened to my fair share of it with limited interest. I wasn't into bass at that time, I was playing lots of very brutal NU metal on guitar and bass was just the...

    The Fretless Club (Part IV)

There is a whole debate on lined vs unlined fretless and I want no part of it but I will say this: if you play bass like the vast majority of us within the first 12 frets, I don't think it really matters that much. If you like to explore and play in the higher register, the lines might be a...
