Double Bass Vance Piano Accompaniment Recordings?

Hello. I have purchased several of the Vance books for self-study. I am trying to find recordings of the piano accompaniment without the example bass, but haven't been successful. Are there any recordings of these, or would I ALSO have to buy the piano books to get the recordings?

Double Bass Gollihur vs. Upton basses

Too bad you are so far upstate in NY. I have a fully carved Bulgarian Kremona from Gollihur from 2001. I'm selling for $2,250 with brand new Pirastro Perpetuals on it. I upgraded to a New Standard a few months ago, and this one is now sitting idly by waiting for someone to enjoy. It's a great...

Double Bass New bass: Carved New Standard La Scala

It's really only my open A (other than the wolf at the Bb an octave up) that causes a weird resistance. I've grown to love the mittels though. I like the tension of them.

Wil owns New Standard basses. His email address is [email protected]. He's normally very responsive.

Double Bass New bass: Carved New Standard La Scala

Yup. I mean, I tend to drool over those 100 year old Morelli's, etc., and certainly they've stood the test of time by literally being in existence now to play (there's a wonderful Juzek I would have probably begged my wife to let me get on the TB classifieds), but what will these basses be like...

Double Bass New bass: Carved New Standard La Scala

At least for the hybrids, and I imagine for the carved, he imports the bodies. He does the varnish himself, and I believe currently Kieran O'Hara does the setup work. I believe the setup has been done by different people over the years. I am just so excited about mine. It's the right "amount" of...

Double Bass New bass: Carved New Standard La Scala

Yeah. I was iffy on the Spiros, but they calmed down pretty quick and I just LOVE them on my bass. The E string really opened and those notes up to the G are clear and growly now. The C on the A string just roars. Only issue I have is the open A with arco seems to just be a little tough to bow...

Double Bass New bass: Carved New Standard La Scala

Fantastic. My hybrid LaScala is breaking in nicely about a month or so in. The Spiros feel fantastic. And the bass just growls so much. Even completely across the board. My E string opened up pretty nicely now, and it feels like it sounds better every day.

Had I not bought my LaScala (which I love) about a month ago, I would have begged my wife to let me up my budget 2.5K and would have bought this in a heartbeat. What a wonderful instrument.

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

Yes. This is a really unique varnish job. The gamba version (Pamplona hybrid) they had is lighter and more "standard". I was really struck by how he did this finish, including doing some "antiquing." On the scroll you can see where he left the edges lighter, etc. It's really striking. And it...

Double Bass Keeping Upright Bass Handy For Daily Practice

I have a stand I purchased from Gollihur back when I got my first bass. The bass sits in my office, and I literally pick it up probably 50 or more times a day. It's by Meisel. I saw one in Gage I really liked that was low, had a place that leans the body against, and also kind of a "dish" for...

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

Well, when I said "dark" I obviously meant the finish. :-) Nah, seriously, I think I do agree with you. When I posted that originally, I was A/Bing against that German Rubner bass that was pretty darned bright...lots of mids, and more high end, so in comparison, the LaScala sounded darker. Now...

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

Yeah, Jeff is awesome. Great, great player. He was on a tour with Take 6 with a guitarist friend of mine who turned me onto Jeff's new album, and I contacted him. He and I both were at Towson and took lessons from the same instructor, but I went a different direction (didn't stay in the program...

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

I'm finding just putting hours on the Spiros, they seem to be settling in a little bit, and those lowest notes are starting to speak quite a bit more (although perhaps to Chris's point, technique adjustments likely help). The bass just keeps sounding better, and I'm psyched. What I do like re...

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

Yeah. I really have to bite on the A but I'm getting used to them. I think for jazz bowing they're gonna be fun.

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

Did you find the low E and those notes up to the A began to speak more as the bass opened? I'm also trying to be aware that it simply may be just like being near my own bass amp... I can't hear that note as much cause the wave is so long. This was all you, Chris. You know I didn't even know...

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

Thinking some day I might switch from the Mittels to the Weichs. My understanding is they are even brighter (and easier to bow).

Double Bass New Bass Day / Week / Month (LaScala Gets the Rose)

This is likely my final new post / thread in this forum (unless we want to create a Club thread). I've been looking for my "forever" (I hope..my wife insists) bass, upgrading from my entry level Bulgarian Kremona carved from 2K1. I was a frequent poster in the "basses for 5K" threads, hybrid vs...

That is beyond ridiculous. I think I'd have to wrap it in bubble wrap to ever take it on a gig (and leave the bubble wrap on!). It's really stunning.

Double Bass NBD: Another road trip to Upton Bass. Food, fun and a New Standard La Scala

Nope. There was one being built that was going to be at Gage. I went up there a few weeks back to try the Pamplona and really liked it but wanted to wait for the LaScala to come in. It's strung with Spiro Mediums and it actually bows well (though the D and G are a bit strident). Big puffy...

Double Bass NBD: Another road trip to Upton Bass. Food, fun and a New Standard La Scala

Will be a different thread but I have a new LaScala in my hands for a week and I'm about to pull the trigger on it. They are now varnished by Wil and I think set up by Kieren O'Hara. It's absolutely the best bass I've played in the about 40 I've tried.

This one is the worst offender. Trying to determine if it's "within normal".

    Double Bass (Maybe) NBD

I have been auditioning (and bonding with) this bass for almost a week. It's a German bass from GEWA...A Walther 11 in "Berlin Antik" finish. The sound is HUGE. The Pirastro Perpetuals I asked them to set it up with so I could A/B with my entry level carved are incredibly growly. Bowing is...

Double Bass Auditioning a New Factory Bass (Ribs Warped?)

Cool. It's brand new which is why I was concerned, cause all my Google searching seemed to say it was something that might occur over time. Another video I saw said it could happen if the ribs are too wet when they're bent...that you'd get the distortion from the grain.

Double Bass Any Input on this Bass?

Agree, and agree with Eric, too. This is the first bass above my current one that I was able to spend real time with so it's a great education. I made it clear with the dealer that if I was going to audition this bass, I should feel no hesitancy of saying no if it wasn't right for me, for any...

Double Bass Any Input on this Bass?

Cool. I'm just a little hesitant on a brand new bass (and the warpage is on almost all the ribs)...I can't get over the sound on this thing though. It's huge.

Double Bass Any Input on this Bass?

Thanks, Eric. This is certainly not in the "cheap" realm, though certainly not the price of most fully carved decent basses. But this is basically a 7500 bass, and it's the top of my range. I will say sound-wise, it's wonderful, at least playing it for an afternoon. I'm going to play it for some...

And again, I wonder if the places where the varnish is "stained" is on purpose or whether it's just evidence of a water damaged bass

It's a German factory bass: https://www.gewamusicusa.com/item/.us403.750 It sounds incredible. I just really don't want any construction issues.

Double Bass Auditioning a New Factory Bass (Ribs Warped?)

This is a brand new bass I'm trying out. It's a German factory bass, and I love the sound. But I noticed some warping on the ribs (the upper bouts), and I'm wondering if that's something to be concerned about. Here are some pictures.

Here are three more. You can see the warping a little more and also a pic of the back.
