What strings do you use on your fretless?

As I mentioned before, I play with fender tapewounds. On my jazz bass; slap, fingerstyle and pick all sound great. The bass doesnt need to declare it's presence by a typical slap growling sound. if that means its "gutless" then whatever, man. But a bass doesn't always need to have balls of...

    Slapping on fretless!

once again, i say amen. expounding on FF idea, i hate when anyone says anything like you can't do [put thing that you do "wrong" here] that on [your instrument of choice]. playing music is all about feel. i bet 8 billiion people told Jimi he "can't" play the root notes of chords with his...

    Pick users...

not punchier, it's....different. i suppose it would be punchier if you play hard with them because you can hit harder with a pic than fingerstyle. in the end, it's attack is smoother. it's more like stroking the string than striking it.

What strings do you use on your fretless?

TAPEWOUND!! there is no other option for me. the roundwounds wouldnt bend how I wanted them to(yes I bend strings even on a fretless. it gives a different sound than a slide) and further they tore up my J-Bass' fretboard too much. not only that, if you turn down the tone, it gets rid of...

    Pick users...

First of all, i don't often use a pick, but i do use them. when i use them i usually use a big stubby 3mm. they play really well and they look so darned cool. also, i use a 1.52 mm triangle by i-can't-remember-who (it has an eagle like harley davidson's eagle on the front). for slower punk...

    Slapping on fretless!

AMEN BROTHER! as fellow fretless slapper, i think its great that we're not alone. i have a fender fretless Jazz Bass with Tapewound strings, and with the tone turned down on the bass and a cut in bass and boost on the highs in the amp i get a very funky, subtle sound. the bass is almost...

    Anyone else play like this?

i personally put my thumb on the neck pickup, but do what's comfy for you. i will never let another player, save the late jaco, tell me the "right way" to play bass. playing is all about developing style and feel, so if what you do doesn't severely hinder you, and it sounds good to you, then...

    Bending strings

The first thing i did when i picked up a bass was bend. I had blisters on my middle finger from bending the E string at the 3rd fret all the way up to an A. it dosen't have to be just something to put in a solo or a fill. I think it would sound great on a line. something to try is this: in...

Slap: What am I doing wrong?

I am a beginner bassist. I admire the style of bassists like flea and bootsy collins, but I can't figure out how to slap. I mean I know that you hit the E and A strings with your thumb, and you pluck the D and G strings with your middle finger. I know how to make percussive tones, but I cant...
