£350. Need Bass. GO!

First of all, I'd like to wish you all a happy Politically Correct Annual Gift Day! :p

So, I've got £350 to blow on a new bass and a hard case.

I've been thinking of a MIM Fender Precision Bass, seeing as I've played two before and enjoyed them quite a lot.

I play grunge/alt. rock, and my influences are Daisy Chainsaw, Muse, InMe, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, QOTSA... I could go on.

So... shoot! :D

politically correct..... BAH!!! ;)

Yamaha BB414, first bass that i absolutely had to have once i played it. Great P-Bass tone, with an added soapbar if you really wanna get funky. $399 US Not quite to sure how that translates....:hmm: -Cody

An MIM P is a good choice if you find a nice one. It suits pretty much any genre you can think of. It may be an annoying answer but you have to find the bass that feels right for you, but I think the P would be a good choice.

Oh, and a very happy politically correct annual gift day to you too!

Ibanez ATK
Yamaha BB614

The SR500 is a (radically) different animal than the P. Best is to try and see. The SR500 has dual humbucker, active 3 band eq, very versatile, but can sound bland and uncharacteristic. The P is the on the other side. One pickup, one sound, no messing around, used in many genres (although a P slapped is peculiar).

ATK is a stingray clone. I would personnaly go for that, for grunge/alt rock/metal.
BB614 is like a P with more versatility (added jazz pickup at the bridge, good P sound and a pre-amp to boot). For me, the BB has more character than a SR500.

Also, a good amp goes a long way towards a good sound. Better have a good amp and an OK bass, than an expensive bass and a crappy amp.

good advice on this thread.

(i notice TBers always advise aiming higher than your budget. good work!)

i would say, if you can find a good MIM P, that's a decent thing to go for. failing that, Ibanez ATK is an excellent choice for the player in the sub-£400 zone.

and as a wild card, try a double humbucker MM2 OLP. not a popular choice and quality varies wildly, so try before you buy, but the good ones are among the best budget basses out there.
