Quick update.....

Last detail before spraying the lacquer finish. I've been doing this on a few builds and I like tweaking it a bit every time.

Glad you guys like the tuners recess. And with the last woodwork detail finished, we are moving on to spray the bass. I'm just finishing to spray two other basses. Then I'll start this one. Pictures will follow soon.

Hi there! This thread has been very quiet recently. Not for lack of news though. Rather, after offering two cameras and three mobile phones to the gods of spraying and wet sanding, I have officially declared the finishing area off limits to all electronics and anything more complex than a hammer and a spoon.

The bass is coming up truly beautiful - if I may say so myself. There has been quite a lot of pores, cracks and voids filling which has required a fair bit of mixed techniques and materials. It is just amazing how a wood such as this burl can produce new spots to be filled almost overnight.

After a number of pore filling sessions the bass is ready to be sprayed. It will be done in one week and cure for about three more weeks. Then - and only then! - I will allow my camera to get close and take some shots.

I am also very glad and proud to share with you all that there is an increasing number of Über basses out there :) I have built, year to date, already more basses than I did last year. This is more than I could hope for. I am now building batches of five basses at the time and the next five slots are already almost all filled in. My building time has gone from one year to six months per bass. In fact, even less now. I owe this also TB and to you all. So, thank you so much!

Pretty bad. In fact they are all beyond repair. The finish dust is so fine it goes inside the shell and kills the mother board. Repairing that would have cost me almost as much as the price of a new one. I miss those cameras that you could just open and clean with a brush. But such is the world we live in, I suppose :bored:

Having said that......

I allowed my dust and water proof phone (not kidding) into the spray area to take one picture and here it is.

This is still probably just half way through. The bubbles you see in the bright area are due to my wetting the surface prior to taking the picture. They are not in the finish. I have struggled for quite some time looking for a way to finish a bass without changing the natural colour of the wood. I believe my struggle is over ;)

After a few weeks the finish has fully cured and I can move on to cleaning the bass, wiring it and assemble it. Here are some pictures of the body. I am really pleased with the way it turned out, the wood colours looking fairly true to the natural ones. The transparent filling of the voids works the way I hoped it would. But I had done that before, so I knew it would ;) It's a lot of work and requires so much more spraying. But the result is really worth it. One can basically see the walls of the voids and the veneer underneath.

Unlike the body, the neck is finished satin. I will upload pictures soon. Wiring, assembling and set up should not take me more than the rest of the week. Can't wait to string this bass and take it for a spin.

The bass is being assembled. Preamp and p-ups are in...cleaning up the body..... cleaning all that fine white dust. There's got to be a better way. I now seal some areas and that work well. Other tight spots are a bit of a drag.

The neck is done. Body will be tomorrow. Here's the headstock with hardware. Satin back and clear gloss front.
