Über-Jay V Spalted Maple

Finally.... a sound clip with pictures.

The clip was recorded at a friend's studio right before I left to Europe. Didn't have the time to edit the pictures and the sound clips until today. I finally managed to cut it down to a more manageable 2'52" length.

It's DI recorded - wish I had a 4 x 10 cabinet to add to the mix. No pedals and no much fiddling with the OBP either. .40/.120 stainless steel roundwound. Extremely low action for that touch of buzz that makes for a more aggressive attack. That's how I like it. Glad to know the owner likes it that way too ;)

Please listen to it through good headphones or proper speakers. Computer spakers make basses sound awful

full disclosure: I am completely, wholehartedly, undeniably biased and I love the big, nasty, grawly sound of this bass. I dig the snappy, articulated tone and its electronics' simplicity. As I pluck the strings with a combination of figer tips and finger nails, the sound produced has more attack. I like the way it turns out on this bass.

The B string is tight and big sounding. As a bassist, I'm very pleased with it. But the true hero of this 5er IMHO is the E string. I'm really glad. To me, a great E is what makes a good 5er.

Forgive the lack of precision and messy playing. I was in a hurry and shamefully unprepared and underrehearsed :o

Sounded good even through the computer speakers at work. I would love to hear it with a less scooped sound.

By the way I'm incredibly curious about what you do for a living. You travel the world, find time to do these incredible builds and you can play. When you are seated in an airplane, do they bring you selfdestroying messages with impossible missions?

LOL... If I told you I'd have to kill you - and everyone else reading this :ninja:

It's a busy life.... building basses is the relaxing part.

I'm a film director and a photographer. That keeps me very busy when on a project and leaves me with a lot of free time in between jobs. Over the last few years I have gradually reduced the number of projects I take on to dedicate more time to building. In a not too distant future I will just build basses. And play with my band.

Self destroying messages with builds specs will be welcomed :)

The scooped sound is due to a few reasons. The way the bass was set for the recording and the way I play.

P-ups and OBP are Sadowski with Vintage tone. So, in a way, you know what you can expect. I played the bass in active mode and cranked the bass and treble controls with a 50% increase on overall tone. That kinda soften the mids.

This bass would sound much less scooped if someone else played it with the exact same settings. That's what I always experience when checking out basses with other bassists. I tend to make basses sound that way.

On a hindsight, I should have recorded different sounds. I wanted to have another bassist I know to play it too. Not enough time.

Thank you :bassist:

How I wish Rok was there when I visited your place :atoz:

On the other hand, I was sold by the low note GROWLS! Superb! :bassist:

You know? Last year I came this close to go to your country for a shoot. Next time ;)

That's o.k. we believe you. This way you can keep us alive and at least it offers us some plausable deniability.

LOL.... :D

ps: thank you RedMoses
