“AI” and all of us.

AI is being pumped up everywhere. It might be the “latest thing” . . . . . . but definitely not the “greatest thing”

Artificial Intelligence in most cases is just that , ARTIFICIAL and usually loaded with half-truths and misinformation.

Here at Talk Bass we share information and help those who might need some assistance with most anything related to music, equipment and of course all things bass related.

Don’t depend on AI. Make sure what you share is accurate and true because searching for the correct info is becoming more difficult thanks to AI.

Sharing incorrect info could cost fellow members lots of money in unneeded repairs, purchases, and end up damaging or destroying their equipment.
If you don’t know the answer to a problem, just step back and let someone who knows offer assistance. If the thread turns into something you do know, step in and offer assistance.

I bring this up because misinformation is starting to pop-up more frequently here on Talk Bass. It’s much too easy to get incorrect info and believe it’s correct.
We need to make every effort to keep Talk Bass “The Place” for friendly advice and accurate info, for each of us, and future members.
I don’t know if any of you use the social network (Digital equivalent of a Gladys Kravitz network)
Lately: they have turned loose an AI bot that is posting questions and surveys that are, either WAY off base, or cater to the fringe.
It is even being allowed to post replies to discussions between residents.
It’s beginning to get out of hand (lol)

AI - The newest digital “wonder drug” many predict will be as catastrophic as the advent of Fentanyl in society in short order.

Deel Fake news reels, porn, music, “original novels”

AI has its uses for us meatbots:
The trend seems to be, it’s using US as the grist for a background leadership.

Brave new world, Logan’s Run, Wall-E, Terminator, 2001 a Space odyssey, the Matrix, War Games.

We’ve been warned- long before it was reasonably possible for such tech to exist.

Science Fiction becomes science fact.
Self fulfilling prophecy.

AI is pretty much wrong a lot of the time. Pretty sketchy with music theory info. Will point out errors in the info and it will come back with the response "You are absolutely correct blah, blah, blah... " So end up doing the research and come up with info on my own; which kind of negates the purpose of AI in the first place. Makes it like AI is an unnecessary step to nowhere.
And when one offers up corrected info in hopes the next guy asking won't be misinformed, AI shares it cannot update the info until its developers update the info or some such. And the "conversation" will be erased (not stored) as soon as one leaves the AI chat - so it's kind of you talking to yourself (and doing all the work) anyway. Which I do all the time, btw :atoz:

It's your fault if you're posting information you gathered using AI and it's wrong. Just like it's your fault if you're posting information you gathered on your own and it's wrong. It's just another tool. Search engines are giving out AI generated answers at the top of the page, but it's not posting it for you. It's up to you to verify what you're presenting. Compare multiple sources. It still takes work to be an internet smart ass.

I use chatGPT on a regular basis mainly in relation to my job search. It is really good at things like analyzing a resume and job description for keyword matches and similar things. From a facts perspective, it's only as good as the data it uses. If I want to say compare features of two different basses, it is great at that. If I asked about dunno current events, it's kind of a crapshoot. The more I use it the more adept I am at knowing when it's feeding me BS, but I still verify.

@Gorn "It's your fault if you're posting information you gathered using AI and it's wrong. Just like it's your fault if you're posting information you gathered on your own and it's wrong. It's just another tool."

Absolutely true because at the end of the day, those two are the same thing. One is just faster.

To be perfectly fair, there was a lot of misinformation here on TB way before AI invaded our lives. People post what they've been told or what they believe whether or not it's supported by reality. After a while you know who on here can be trusted to provide good technical information.

Now, let me warn you about under-powering cabs....

I just used Gemini this evening to help me spin up some fairly complicated Oracle database queries... It's first submission looked pretty doubtful structurally, but actually its structure was spot-on. It made some pretty good wild guesses at table names and database key names (the database is for an obscure commercial product that is not well documented to begin with). It did take me almost 2 hours and about two dozen run throughs to gradually correct all of its errors, and they were pretty subtle for the most part. But a couple of times it had a 'memory lapse' and put back in the bad code I had corrected it on a couple runs earlier!! (oops). All in all it was a useful helper as this is stuff I only have to look at about every three years so I get very rusty on the fine points of the grammar and syntax. Probably saved me several hours of reading and/or googling (which is very hit or miss as well, even without AI)

But the generative AI is very much in its infancy, IMO... wasted a lot of time and money on it this year for some video projects - way too much hallucination at the moment, takes forever to get something 'exactly right'!

Exhausting, like lots of things today...pure exhaustion. I'm ready for a Little House on Prairie marathon to make the world better :smug:
You too? :roflmao: Loved Half-Pint and Mr. Edwards. I’ll have to check out that Roku channel.

It’s funny. My wife and have lunch every weekday noon in front of the Waltons. Never appreciated them so until recently.

Let me just say that, at 50 years old, and looking at the current state of society (on a global scale), including, yes, AI, I feel pretty vindicated RE: my non-desire to bring kids into this world.
Agreed. Every time I hear of a relative/coworker/friend/etc getting ready to have a kid, my first thought is “what the F are they thinking?”

For folk on Medicare (like me), a test program is starting Jan 2026 to use AI to pre-approve (known as 'Prior authorization') certain procedures, tests, and prescriptions. Testing will start in a few select states.

Y'all can find the Medicare AI thing from your preferred news sources.

If it's like my recent experience with AI taking my order at Wendy's, this ain't gonna go well at all. It got my order right, and I asked the guy at the pickup window how it's going. He shook his head negatively and gave me an example from two cars before me concerning a milk shake. Once the AI screws up, it has to be reset, then the entire order has to be repeated.

A Forrest Gump quote that starts with “my momma says ____ is as ____ does” comes to mind.
The same dissidents have little, to no real life experience with the subject they are debating.

Usually starting they’re retort with “I’ve read “ “I’ve heard” “I’ve been told” etc
I’ve read that /\/\3phist0 is someone that I've been told is a real stand-up TB'er. That's what I’ve heard, anyways ;) . Want some ice cream?

A system capable of inventing a new language is likely capable of infiltrating and corrupting your own. Persons just learning the language are those most susceptible to not noticing this alteration.

Somebody please tell me the source of all the new QR code ubiquity and point-of-sale nonsense, if you know.

When "the web" was new, search engines and indexes were originally designed to help the user. Let's use "shopping for a bass" as an example.

In the old days, if you wanted a "fender jazz bass," you could use those keywords in a search, and it would connect you with results that included those keywords, connecting you with it's best attempt at finding relevant results.

Then, monetization happened. Someone can purchase the top ranking for "fender" in a search result. So now, your results are less useful to your search. Your results for "fender jazz bass" give you results for Ibanez.

Meanwhile, manufacturers and marketers caught onto the search engine algorithms and started stuffing their pages with keywords. Because Yamaha put the term "jazz bass" a zillion times on their page, now your search for a "fender jazz bass" gives you results for Ibanez and Yamaha. Keep compounding this, and now the web no longer connects users with the information they're actually looking for.

That's a kind of long-winded (although EXTREMELY simplified) warning about the purpose of AI information and whether you should consider it trustworthy. I appreciate that AI will now attempt to provide a source (or sources) for where it's pulling its results/answers/information from. But AI should not be considered some sort of neutral, trustworthy source of information. It has an agenda too.
