“Sleeper” 5 strings in the $800-$1,500 range?

I see "sleeper" and I immediately think "Yamaha."
I'm fond of Spector for fivers. You can pick up some really nice Euros for well within your budget range if you shop used. B string on those is to die for and the reason I'm so happy with mine.
You can easily get a Carvin for less than that. I don't care for them myself, but they have enough of a following that they should be a serious consideration.
Based on your enjoyment of the Cirrus, have you considered an MIA Millennium bass? Much of the same ergonomics of the Cirrus with a bolt on neck and Peavey's particular take on the J/MM concept. It's preamp is so well regarded that some folks special-ordered or swapped it into their USA Cirrus basses. There are some other USA Peavey 5 strings like the Sarzo or a Forum AX 5 that might also be worth looking at, but the Millennium would be my first stop.
A used USA L2500 is well within your range. I'd skip the Tributes and go for the USA.
Carvin is a very good suggestion. Well made. I liked my LB75F quite a bit.
Also, some of the slightly more obscure Skyline basses might be worth looking at. The J-Sonic 5 or a 5 string Jerry Scheff (might only be used...) would be on my list. I like the pickup positions of the Scheff quite a bit.

My usa ernie ball sub 5 was like 400 used years ago... more like 500 or 600 now but still a steal. Incredible instrument.... clearly was usa plekd n fret finished...
I just bought a used ESP E-II J5. Seymour duncan pickups, Aggy 3 band EQ, 35" scale so excellent B, chambered body so not overly heavy. Its was originally like an $1800 bass. Made in japan also. An unbelievable bass considering I paid $600 for it.
The Euro is a great bass. I totally forgot about this option, which is crazy since I have recommended these myself.

Just seconding or thirding or whatever the Yamaha suggestion.
I feel like I have my 5 string bass needs covered with my admittedly heavy StingRay 5, but if I was going to get something besides that, Yamaha would be at the top of my list.

Try an MTD Kingston Heir. Very good bass. Ergonomic, asymmetrical neck, fairly light and has the kind of pickups you'll probably like.

He's discontinued them, i believe, but should have something new coming.
You can find "factory seconds" on eBay for ~$350.
That's how I got mine, and I spent weeks scouring it to find the "finishing flaw".
Sounds killer, plays like a dream, and worth more than double what I paid for it.

Yes. Forgot about these. I remember when they announced them last year. They were tough to come by at the time.
They are out in the wild and hitting the used market now. I've got an Xotic XJ-1T 4-string and the preamp is just about my favorite.
