$100 bass vs $10,000 bass

Really interesting, thanks for that insight. The cost of World-Class Instruments-Bosendorfer, Steinway, Bach Trumpets, etc. makes the $$ we Bassists have to pony up for a Pro level axe laughable in comparison, A $1500 G&L or MusicMan eg will not shy away from any Bass Guitar performance requirement! Some Upright players pay more than that for their bows.

Yep! When I was kid, I could've had a car, or a nice cello. I went with the instrument, and I'm glad I did!

I've always heard that there are good Strads and bad Strads. The good ones are amazing, the bad ones are no more interesting than "normal" violins (tone wise). Of the 50 or so cellos that are still around, I'd always heard only like 5 are any good.

Exactly, it's all in the fingers and now I'll sell my expensive basses (including my fodera) and buy a Lindo p bass for $100. Cheers!

That's in essence exactly what I've done. It's all about Rondomusic for me. But I've not needed another bass for seven years now. I'm happy with the six I have, so...

I think there is a good point here. Since I started building basses years ago, I started questioning if all the expense was worth it for an expensive bass. I play a $139 SX bass exclusively with DiMarzzio Ultra Jazz Pickups over 150 or so gigs now. It is fine and I do get tone complements from experienced sound guys a lot.

I did think the Fodera sounded a bit better than the cheapee bass, but not enough to justify the price.

The only justification I see for spending a lot on a bass is the beauty and customization factor. At one time, I spent $2300 on a custom fretless because at the time there were not decent quality short scale fretlesses on the market. Looking back, I should ahve put a short neck on a Fender jazz and been done with it. Although I liked the color of the custom instrument and the finish of the headstock...

Yet another slap video. It got more interesting when he played some "ordinary" licks in between.

So sonic difference can't make it more enjoyable for different people? In your initial post you acted like different basses make no difference an EQ can't compensate for. Not talking about pricetag, but different pick ups make different sounds and can happen well within a certain pick up type aswell. Winding #s and the magnets themselves play a huge role and usually the 100$ gear comes with budget PUPs.

Watch that without looking, pretty interesting.

No i "acted like" eq can outweight the difference between these basses. Of course those things can affect sound, but not necessarily in a good or bad way. There is too much emphasis on monetary value rather than sound. We tend to see our instruments as extensions of ourselves, but more in a visual and physical sense than sound. We can talk about the reasons but my point is that people are not using their ears as a primary sense organ when watching videos like this. If it were just audio, it would be different, and nobody would pick out the expensive basses. Everyonr thinks they can or would be able to, but blind tests always prove otherwise.

The video might as well compare apples to elephants. Each bass demonstrated has a specific tonal design goal, and each meets that goal in its own way. I have a number of basses, but the instrument I play most often is the one that speaks to me; my go-to is the one I play the best with the least amount of effort. It cost more than many would be willing to pay, but that doesn't make it better or worse than someone else's choice, nor does the cost of my go-to make it a ridiculous waste of money...for me. I also play piano. As someone that owns a piano I can honestly say all the fuss over the cost of an electric bass is highly amusing. Relative to many other instruments, there are no expensive electric bass guitars. So put it in context and play what makes you happy; don't worry about the cost of alternative instrument choices or what others think.

"Find the one that makes you comfortable." Good advice, and I think you know it when you feel it, right away. A few years ago I bought an 82 or 83 Wunkay from our friend @dukeplaysbass at the Owl Farm. On plugging it in and playing it my response was, "This thing practically plays itself." I'm still not a great player, but I think I'm better for not having to work around my instrument.

Every G&L I've played/ owned feels right to me!:roflmao: They, along with EBMM are almost no-brainers IMO.
But what you & Vic say is true IME- I first play a bass un-amplified to see how the woods and the neck feel, and how it resonates by itself, along with how my fingers feel on the fretboard.
I was in Japan 2 years back- OMG do they have Inventory, :jawdrop: including stuff we'll not see here in the USA!

So there was a selection of DRAGONFLY basses by Harry's Engineering- a well-respected builder in Shibuya.
The CSJ-4 I picked up was IT,bought it, had it shipped and it makes a much better souvenir of Japan than say a Kimono or something!
All in the feel, whether you spend $100 or $100,000 (now THAT would be SOME bass).

Yeah.. I keep getting his videos in my stream. Something about the guy and those pointless videos, he just irks me. He's a good player no doubt, but, ugh.. Just ugh.
He is a youtube star who happens to play bass. Gimics get clicks, it is just the culture of youtube. He has done some impressive videos, for example he played 100 bass lines in a row. He is making money by getting clicks, thats not going to happen if he was just doing covers or things of that sort. Its pretty impressive that he has gotten such a huge following considering he was completely unknown.

That guy can only play funky style slap line ...

The Lindo was ok, the Fender perfect for what he was doing and the Fodera was out of its context. It was like bringing caviar at the Superbowl ... way too fancy for what is going on.
If you see his other videos he plays figit spinner style, plays chili pepper (literal chili pepper) style, tool (literally plays with hammers ect) style ect. But he also plays lots of diiferent styles of muic.
