$1000 price range.

Yo Ryan, I know you said you're not big on Fenders. But, if you get a chance, try a Precision Elite II (although, there's not many out there). They were only in production for about 2 years. The basses are awesome. The guitars, not so much. A lot of people had issues with the guitars. In particular, it seemed the tremolo was subpar. Those of us who have the basses, love them. Those who used to have one typically regret letting go of it. 2 pairs of split lace sensor p/ups - 1 standard P position, 1 bridge. Preamp. 3 way for the switch preamp controls one, the other, or both p/ups. Same switch setup for tone control. Hi mass, fine tuning bridge. Rather heavy, weightwise. Absolutely amazing tone. I can get Wal tone out of her with ease, but my rig may help out with that one. I typically shoot for something between Justin Chancellor and Steve Harris. I let Aston Barrett (The Wailers) use it for a show after the truck carrying his gear broke down. He loves my Elite. I've been playing for more than 25 years, and she's the one! Here's a pic, but photos don't do it justice.

I believe that was Fender's first direct endeavor into the realm of active electronics. I remember when the catalog first came out. Loved the Walnut Elite II bass with the fretless Ebony fingerboard ;)

BTW, many of the same improvements extended into their Standard line at that time as well.

Close. 1979-82? they made the Precision Special, which evolved into the Elite. I had a 1980 P Special. Wish I kept it. They should have kept making the Elite basses and scrapped the Strat and Tele Elites, rather than ditching the entire line. I am quite fond of the walnut ones as well.

I thought Ibanez basses were for guitarists and people who don't know there are other options. I owned one back in the day and once my eyes were opened to the world of quality basses I never looked back.

Does Ibanez make good basses these days? By good I mean above mid range.

OP- I'd go with an MM or other options. You could probably get a USA Cirrus or Millennium Plus in that price range too and they are killer.

ouch, hating on the ibanez like that. for one, i am a guitarist, for 2 i have played a lot of basses lately and the one that stood out above the rest was an sr500, and i played a stingray, some high end fenders and a few warwicks. i have a bad back and the weight of the soundgear's was a big deal for me.

i think a lot of people would agree with me when i say ibanez makes good basses these days.

Ibanez has REALLY improved their basses since I started playing. They used to be mediocre at best, I played a high end(for a lot less than any of the high end basses I have) and it was pretty nice! I was impressed by how much better they have gotten.

As long s you are happy, that's all that matters. Right?

so what is everyone's view on the corvette $$? i have a line on a German made one for under a grand. will they get a good tool/rock sound or are they more muddy?

those german $$'s are not what i would call muddy, but they do have a darker sound than a lot of active basses. the basic tone is aggressive and clean, not "warm" in the fender sense of the word but rich and powerful. they're very well put-together (although the stock tuners are kinda cheesy), and extremely versatile. not many drawbacks, but the ergonomics are a little weird. also they don't do overdrive/distortion incredibly well and are bad for pickstyle playing.

I checked out the Ibby you're scoping. Very nice! Check out the pickups. If they say "Bartolini" on them it's an SR3000E. If not, it's an SR3000, assuming they are original. Better hurry up and get it, before I beat you to the punch! ;)

Jam on, brother! :bassist:
