Wow, this is an ignorant comment if I've ever seen one. Dee Dee Ramone played straight eight notes his whole career, and had to stop playing when he sung backup. Mike Dirnt can be all over the neck in an extremely melodic manner with great tone, while singing backup.

So I'm sorry if Green Day isn't pUnk rAwK enough for you, but this is a question of talent. Not who can be the most "scene."

hey im no punk rock fan, i just consider mike dirnt extremely untalented. All his songs sound way to similar for me like the beats in all rap songs. Sorry but thats just my opinion and its cool if you disagree. Green Day is part of the reason why i no longer own a single radio (and rap too). But if you disagree with me im fine with that.

i'm tryin to work m'self into a full time bass playing gig and only know 10% of the listed tunes. have only heard 30% of them...someone needs to kick me out of my old school metal mode. i can sing and play NIB, but still feel like a loser!
imho, the worst thing that could happen to an aspiring working bass player is to be stuck with nothing but >1990 metal.
help!

First off, rap is a generic term. Radio made me hate rap too, but then I discovered that some of it is alright. Do you like the "rock" that's on the radio? My guess is no. Well put it into perspective, radio rap is going to be the same deal. Watered Down crap.

Eh, well, I think Dirnt has a style, and his riffs are somewhat similar to one another, but that's not his fault. He has to play with Billy Joe Armstrong who isn't going to be winning guitarist of the year anytime soon. But as far as punk... be it underground punk, hardcore punk, classic punk, post punk... goes, there are few bassists that stand out. Dirnt is one of them. He doesn't play to be flashy, he plays to be catchy/melodic.

FYI: I hate Green Day.

FMI: Hate is a very strong word.

For me thats the best part about being in a top 40 band, I constantly have to play stuff that I would never do on my own. Stuff I would never buy or listen to. Once I've learned the tunes though it's like new tools in my tool chest. I get a new found appreciation for stuff not on my normal playlist.
