Maximum displacement of a driver won't help much if the voice coil's hardly moving below 80 Hz. Yes, you need to "move air". This is the whole point - frontal area and maximum displacement don't tell the complete story. You need to consider the frequency plot of the drivers in the enclosure they're sitting in, and there's a heck of a lot of things that affect this, cone displacement just being one of them. If manufacturers published plots showing this we'd be having a completely different discussion.
