15"-18" Cab Options

Hey ya'll. My current rig is: (Head) Ampeg SVT 6-Pro (Cabs) Ampeg 410he & Ampeg SVT 15e. Plus numerous effects that seem to keep growing on a weekly basis.

My question is weather to upgrade the 15" cab as has been suggested here on TB. I recently blew a speaker in the 15" cab (which is currently under warranty-thank God), and I'd like to avoid that situation again.

So what cab (s) should I be looking at? I really dig the sound of the sealed 4x10 cab (410he) combined with a 15 inch cab. I have used a 18" Sunn cab in the past. My head is rated at 1100 watts at 4 ohms and 750 watts at 8 ohms.

The Ampeg 410 he is an 8 ohm cab-so I'm looking at another 8 ohm cab...to make it 4 ohms ideally.

Am I crazy or should I stick with what I have? Is blowing the speaker in the 15" cab a freak deal or should I try to get something for it while I can?

Thanks in advance guys!

Well the Hydrive certainly looks interesting-definatly on the radar at $500.

Anyone have experience with any of these:

Eden D118XL-18" Bass cab with 500w rms-$830
Eden D115XL-15" Bass cab with 400w rms-$720
Trace Elliot 1518 Bass Cab w 500w rms-$560
Peavey Tour 115 Bass Cab w 400w rms-$450

Thanks guys-I'm not sure where I'll be able to demo any of these, but I'll give it a shot.

I have that head, and I'm going to get another cab for mine, a Schroeder 412. That's what you want man, with enough ooohmph and power handling that head needs. Anyway, that's what I'm going to do. At present, I can run mine through either an Ampeg SVT15E/210HE, or an Epifani UL212. Neither are really doing it for me, hence the 412 is-a-comin'.

What makes you think you're not simply going to blow another speaker?

Did it blow because of overpowering, or from overexcursion? If it was due to overexcursion (creasing or tearing of the cone), then you're bound to do that to another speaker.

It's like installing a larger fuse because your amp keeps blowing the proper fuse. Eventually you get the hint and stop.

I thought that I WOULD blow another speaker, hence the reason that I started the thread looking for another cabinet that could handle the wattage better.

The tech said that the speaker was blown, didn't explain why it was blown.

assuming the cab is solid/good quality - sticking a new speaker in the cab....its pretty easy...like changing a wheel on a car.. may need to change the porting.....speaker can be modelled in the box in winisd....there are ppl here that can help you with that.

The eminence kappa 3015LF is the current DIY driver of choice here for plenty of loud low end..... certainly cheaper than a new cab, unless you pick up something used on craigslist.
