I'm sure that's a rhetorical question but in any event...
Some possible answers are:
It's easy to spell.
A lot of people own them (probably because the name is easy to spell).
They have a monumental place in history (I'm sure it has nothing to do with the sound or who played them - again, probably the spelling)
Half of the custom builders are using a Fender-ish design
Because so many people build look alikes, parts for them are readily available which breeds more Fender-ish basses.

Thank you sir!

I've had a couple of cracks at Jack Read. Thanks for finding some concrete links! I've posted a link to this post in "source list" in pending. Will work on this soon.

thanks,
Terri

And it's easy to spell!:p

In the early days of electric bass (long before I was born!:D) you played a double bass or a fender. Fender was like much like a kind of instrument instead of a brand. Like kleenex or xerox.

Yeah, I remember seeing album liner notes that would list the singer the keyboard player and then a guy on Fender bass even if he was playing another brand. Just like you said, what they really meant was it was an electric bass, not an upright. It was a big deal because some people thought electric instruments were bastardizations of a proper acoustic instrument. It was probably more extreme with six strings where building an arched top guitar was an art form and building a "plank of wood" with strings and electricity required far less talent.

But that battle ended when a new generation grew up that never knew what it was like not to have electric instruments.

At least, that's what my grandpappy told me....

Two great German Basses! Germany may be one of the funkiest countries in the EU, what with Warwick, Ritter, Fame, Glockenklang, Schack, Human Base, Marleaux, and others:

Always a great source for all things German and Bass...
Okayyyyy......I just saw you listed them. What about Rybski and Ken Benensee?
So, Ken Bebensee is there as well. What about Sandberg? (a German bass)
