18" cab modification question

I'm thinking of adding an 18" to my rig, i've already got a 410 but want to throw it on an 18". I know not too many companies are making 18' speaker cabs these days, and was thinking of trying to build one. Upon further insight, i have no skills as a craftsman and would probably end up losing a finger in the process.

let's say i buy the carvin 18" cab for the $300 but wanted to swap the 500w speaker out for an 800-1000w speaker, would the cabinet design be able to manage a speaker that puts out that kind of juice?

They also make [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that handles 800W and costs 450 new. You might want to try that. That would probably be less expensive than swapping speakers.

You don't need to worry about the wattage, if you repalce the speaker, you need to know the internal volume to calculate what frequency the new driver will function down to. The box will be fine. Also the porting plays a big part in frequency response of a cabinet.

Hate to be a drag, but first of all taking an unloaded cab and just putting some speaker in it is a really bad idea. Cabs are designed for the speakers they have in them, that's just the way it is. You can find a suitable speaker, but you need to reverse engineer the cab first.
Then there's the whole "Mixing cabs" thing you are thinking about. Again, not the best idea. I suggest using the search feature at the top of the page, as there are numerous threads about these things here.

OP apparently has not seen ANY of the posts about why mixing speaker sizes can be bad.
