18 volt batterie mod!

uhhhh. guys, this is what i tend to dislike about Talk Bass. no offence guys, but i CANT get any thread on with out like half of the people ripping on me. i DO NOT see this going on at the Warwick fourm, and i hate people comming on to this and pointing out my flaws, i have never gotten ripped on as much as talk bass. and i do not like this one bit.... :mad:

OHHHHH yes... You need to remember that i mainly use this on the Warwick forum. it is meant to go with the MEC's, to witch i said "safe for a thumb". i also posted this because i have NEVER seen something like what i posted on any forum, i this that this post has a potential to help many people. :smug:

What you are suggesting may DAMAGE someone's bass if it's not meant to run on 18V.

If you want to call that "ripping on you" and "pointing out your flaws", go ahead. I call it warning people so that they don't fry their preamps because of your incorrect advice.

i put this thread on directly from the warwick fourm. k? :crying: i think that my advice isn't TOTALY FALSE... i MADE this mainly for the warwick forum. witch use MEC electronics. i put this on talk bass to see if others could benefit from this, and on the warwick forum, i have gotten SO MANY people thanking me for this post. and a while ago, i had trouble with one of my basses neck's twisting. i got help from warwick, actually, people where GLAD to give me advice. but here, i posted that same exact thread on talk bass, and soon enough, people where ripping on me, and telling me to dump that" piece of crap" and go to a squire. and in EVERY SINGLE post i have ever put on this thread has gotten many of the people ripping on me. this is insane, i really don't like this, and by safe i mainly meant, that it doesn't require any soldering to the board it's self, it can be replaced easily, their fore, safer.

i also feel that people would be smart enough to see if their bass can handle 18 volts. Thats what i did before i started this, and if people are smart, they would too.

I would expect people to check first as well, but number one, sometimes it can be difficult to get the specifications of your preamp, especially if it's the stock preamp on a cheap bass and not an aftermarket upgrade.
Number two, people are stupid beyond all belief these days. It would be wonderful to think that only intelligent people use the internet, but we all know darn well that that isn't the case.
(I'm not pointing any fingers though. :hyper:)

You said that this mod would not hurt the bass, and given the well documented step by step pictures, I think many people would be inclined to believe that you know what you are talking about.

I think you've found a good way to do the 18v mod in a way that's reversible, but you shouldn't tell people that this won't harm their basses since a week ago you didn't even what this mod was about. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9007814
Please don't take this as if I'm trying to rip on you, but there are people here who are more knowledgeable than you might be about these kind of topics.

Its about time someone put together a good set of instructions on how to do this one. You've put the warnings in the original post, that was a good move.

and about the 'ripping'.. welcome to talkbass. Wait till your thread falls off the first couple of pages and you see the same people 'ripping' on others about 'searching first' for your post. ;) :bassist:

I woudn't let it bother you. that's the nature of a forum. you will always have disagreements and different opinions. I think its common sense that nobody would put another battery in their bass if their preamp couldn't handle it. I have a preamp running at 27 volts but I did the research beforehand to make sure it could handle it

Comparing the TB user bass to the Warwick Forum Bass is like comparing Warwick's to Fender's.:hiding:

Anyways, I thought the "How-To" was excellent. I have a Fortress MasterMan & a Streamer ProM I'm going to try this on. They could use a bit more HeadRoom. As for my Thumb, 27 Volts on Tap. BABY!!!!

Why do you have a seperate 9V battery for the LEDs?:confused:
Do the LEDs drain the preamp's batteries too quickly?
I would just run everything off the two 9V batteries.

The Single 9V is original, and currently runs the Blu Light on the Body of the Bass.

The Double Battery Box was added when someone Ubber-Customized the Electronics. Yank out the EMG's and toss in the Status!!!

I have a 27 volt tube preamp for the piccolo bass. I also modified one of the StingRay preamps to run at 27 volts with an OPA1611 opamp. I got 5 of them free from TI. somebody from another forum was helping me out. a lot of great opamps out there. If I fry the chips from experimenting, no money lost. only knowledge gained

I think your post and counter arguements are very valid and accuracte
I also think many of the others are as well; no reason why two different opinions can't coexist
* A great mod for basses like yours and very well thought out
* Untrue that 18 volts gives you anything more than headroom for transients; IMO this is very imprtant for some guys / some gear combo's but not really that much demand
* Not said by you but absolutlely true that running 2 batteries in series has a high probability that some circuit will be damaged by someone in some instrument
While workable on Warwicks, a very unsafe practice in general

You should try the BMW forums... YIKES!!! You can't get a straight answer to any question without a bunch of lame responses like "your car and/or ideas suck and you are a moron, just buy an M3"

I like your idea! Sure it's not for everyone's application, so installer beware, but it's a nice solution to those who could use it.
