There are a lot more manufacturers with 9.6V regulated supplies.

It's not that difficult to protect against an over voltage input like these while still allowing them to operate properly.The Behringer BD21 cannot take more than 9 volts. The smell that thing made when I tried a different power supply from my guitarist when I forgot mine...
Once that magic smoke is out, well it is like the proverbial Genie...If the box says 9VDC then you should give it 9VDC.
Let us not overcomplicate our lives and release the magic smoke, eh?
