18v into 9v OD Pedal

Well regulated supplies are a good thing to have.

Gotta be careful though with poorly regulated ones.
I've seen some where the unloaded voltages are almost twice that of the recommended input voltage.
In some cases those, manufactuerers expect the supply to only be used with the device it was intended for.
They know that the loading of the device will draw enough current so that it pulls down the voltage to the expected level. If you try to run more current than expected, the voltage sags further and can't "regulate" (I use the term loosely) well enough. That can let more AC get through and cause hum, in addition to other poor performance issues.

And I also agree with the other statement that boosting the signal ahead of the pedal, as in driving it harder, will give you less headroom... in the pedal. What happens beyond that depends on a lot of other factors.

Some people run several devices on on supply without understanding that just because a supply says 9.6 VDC on the case, that doesn't mean it will deliver 9.6 volts under a heavier than expected current draw. One must also consider how much current the power supply can provide and compare that with the total current draw of all devices.
 
The Behringer BD21 cannot take more than 9 volts. The smell that thing made when I tried a different power supply from my guitarist when I forgot mine...
It's not that difficult to protect against an over voltage input like these while still allowing them to operate properly.
I guess it says something about the manufacturer that will offer a wide ranging input voltage.
 
I would not recommend doing this with the Hot Wax. With a lot of really simple analog overdrives, there's a good chance giving it double the voltage won't damage anything and can give you more headroom. The Hot Wax has some more stuff going on in it...some more complicated switching than a true bypass pedal, voltage regulators/converters...things that will be unhappy if you double the voltage.

In fact, I can actually tell you that some circuitry in the Hot Wax runs from +9V to -9V, so you're already getting the 18V swing there. The Crayon and Hot Tubes drive sections are still run at 9V as to maintain as much as each normal pedal's character as possible in the Hot Wax.
