Double Bass 1949 slap solo

Very cool. I'm getting asked to play a bit of that slap rockabily stuff on my EUB. I'm not too sure what I'm hearing so it's making me nervous.

I hear mutilple tapping clicks like snare rim taps between the walking notes but how does he get that without "popping" off additional notes between the taps? Or is he going a bazzilion miles an hour to get all the clicks with a downslap?

Slap bass is a very unique and extensive technique that requires ALOT of practice to get good at. There are some videos out there that explain the basics - I recommend "Slap Bass: The Ungentle Art" by Mark Rubin & Kevin Smith.

In that DVD, they assume you already know the basics on playing the bass - and concentrate on slap technique.

I saw a short vid of that really old "inventor" of upright slapping, (was it Milt someone?) and he was very gentle with it. Completely different to the bashing "guru's" on youtube, but so groovy. Something about his style appeals to my inner drummer. Those little percussive accents are magic.

I've been slapping away at my Stagg and getting some flashes of coherence. Hope it clicks soon.

Those are awesome Kev!! It's cool to get to see Pops play - he's not on film much. He had an amazing career and really had a huge impact on popularizing the string bass in Jazz over the tuba in the early days. One of my all time favorites.

That fricken cab Calloway vid is a-fricken-mazing!! He was such a cool character - the moves are smooth - the bass playing is bad azzz! The song too.... Imagine for this time period! If the modern swing band movement had half the spunk, outspokenness, style, and swing that Cab had it wouldn't be dead. Thanks for sharing that.......
