1958 P Bass thoughts?

You might consider that in preparation of your bass playing adventure Fender replaced the '57 Vintage Reissue P with the American Vintage Series '58 P a few years ago. I don't believe in the magic of 58 years old instruments. Most likely the newer ones will be better instruments. But that's just me.

Apart from the investment: if this is your only bass, will you really bring a £8,095 instrument to every gig and every rehearsal? At least ask the seller if there is a CV Squier P for free in the deal.

I'm not one to tell others what to do. However, that is a lot of money, so as someone with a fair amount of experience, I feel a responsibility to echo what several people in this thread have told you: a newer P Bass will be just as good as this one at a small fraction of the price, especially since you are just starting out.

That being said, I understand from your post that this purchase is not necessarily about the performance of the bass. There are other factors. As long as you are clear about that, enjoy your purchase.

The most important point to your level of satisfaction of this purchase or any other bass oriented purchase will be what you actually do with it. I hope you get a fruitful and positive experience from this foray into the bass world, man. It's beautiful here. Get some lessons, meet some like minded musicians and enjoy yourself!

Buy it you won't regret it! I'm 57 and have been playing all my life (since I was 11!) One of the best decisions of my life was picking up the bass. It is certainly not to late to pick it up. As for buying a '58 Precision? Why not? Go for it. You sound like a guy who will give it a good home and that is what historic vintage instruments need, a good steward who will maintain and play it so it is there for the next generation! You can rock well into your 50s and beyond., me this summer

That’s a lovely bass and life is indeed short. You obviously want it and you can you can afford it so the fact that it may be Irrational or illogical to some people is irrelevant. If you think it would make you happy then you should do it.

I completely get where you're coming from, and based on what you’ve told us I think you will find it much more inspiring than playing a new bass.

My thing is vintage Gibson Thunderbirds, I have more than a few. The beaters get playing time the minty ones stay in the case. The example you are looking at has what I consider good honest player wear, I wouldn't rule it out. As we say here on TB there is a reason it has all that player wear.
