1965 Pbass looking for pickups. Hard to find what would you replace with

This is mostly true, although other factors contribute to this. If I had an actual vintage bass, I'd contact the Custom Shop to make me an exact replica. They have specs, drawings, and extensive notes on a very wide selection of vintage pickups and can replicate them.

Fender hasn't done all that great a job producing the pups that they claim to be exact replicas, although that could be for cost reasons.
Don't you guys do custom work as well?

Do you still have the original pickups and they're non-functioning, or have the pickups been replaced and you're trying to take it back to stock? Either way I'd get Jimmy Coppolo to wind some. He's monastic in the way he winds and has a special passion and respect for vintage Fender.

Hello

The owner I got the 65 bass changed the original pick ups in mid 70s. They are just too bright, they Seymour Duncan I was told. I played Pbass before but never one so bright. I'm just looking for the standard Pbass sound

So bright that even with my SVT with no treble and mid it's still bright! It would work very well if I played in the Stranglers per example pre 1980s but I don't.

Well, pretty much everyone there is. However, the queen of the Custom Shop, MJ, doesn't really play, but knows more (and obsesses more) about pickups than anyone I've ever met. She has notebooks of drawings and specs. She probably knows more about vintage Fender pickups than Fender does.
