I picked up a white ‘66 Mustang Bass that seems all original including the case. Someone put a jazz bridge cover on it but the bridge seems all original including the mute which is hard as a rock. The pick guard is disintegrating but I have a replacement from a ‘67.
My question is there seems to be a black undercoat which raises the question if it’s a refin or just something strange happened when it was originally finished. My understanding is in ‘66 they only came in white, red, or blue. Has anyone here on the forums have any insight if the black is an undercoat or if it’s multiple finishes? I honestly don’t care - just curious. The bass is a great player and a keeper.
