I've looked a couple of times for a copy of the mid-60s Fender catalog that has hands with pointed fingers and the names of each product. It's a classic!

Anyone else remember that?

No tort or flats on the cannon. An obvious fail and the reason sales of cannons never took off.

.... Where's the Mustang bass?

I was wondering that, too. My guess is that the Mustang wasn't in production at that point? Otherwise, why would they exclude it from the catalogue? But, just because that's logical, it doesn't mean it's true. Does anyone know when Mustangs were first made?

Wasn't it considered a "budget" bass back then? Maybe this is more of the "flagship" line.

This is a Fender ad in a magazine, circa 1966. The gal holding the Mustang is a friend. A great lady... she was in some others ads as well, because her Father worked for Fender, and because, she was beautiful, too!

Not sure if you know this, but rosewood was a feature added later. They had maple only for years (most of he 50's IIRC) and then suddenly rosewood was a new, shiny feature. They probably wanted to show them off to get a return on that investment. Not to mention they probably got tired of looking at maple boards only after a while.

kinda funny considering I usually avoid rosewood at all costs these days.

I remember the cannons as being a lot bassier and percussive from my childhood listening.
Darn modern gear can't compare.

Back in 1968 , it took 5 basses and a cannon for a bassist to score with two chicks.......Oh , how the times have changed ?
