Try La Bella "deep talkin'" flatwounds, and you'll be AMAZED how much fatter and richer the tone will get (those strings can make a mediocre bass sound really good. Imagine what it would do with a really good bass )

Thanks for the tip! There are time I need to do some occasional slap and popping for some top 40 tunes and the Chromes still retain enough top end to deliver for that.

The Deep-Talkin's (stainless steel) are a bit more bright than the Nikkel-plated Chromes. But they are heavy, that's the biggest part of the secret .

It looks like he made the cut along the natural dark line that appears to go down to the 3rd fret & then fades into the rest of the wood.

love the way he cut along the grain...thats really amazing work.
I've got a 71 too..it always amazes me how many they let out the shop with the bridge in the wrong position..dont think Ive ever seen one from that year with it right.
