1978 Fender P Bass...MOJO

Very nice. I used to own a bass identical to this, back in 1978. Selling it is still one of my great regrets.

Anyone know what the "official" Fender term is for this finish? I mean the bass in the OP. (If it was mentioned, I missed it. Apologies.)

Some info, that Trans Walnut was a custom color I think between 1972-79. Compared to naturals or Sunburst they are much less common. The poly they used for that color is thinner than what you typically see sprayed on bodies from that era. It cracks easily if you scuff it as shown on the back photo you posted. It behaves more like nitro than poly, but it is poly.

I too, have a the identical bass, mine is a 75. All original except I do not have the original bridge. Case, Pups, tuners, pickguard and pots all original.

I had it appraised by Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, the value they placed on the instrument was $2000. I paid $285 in 1975. Yours looks to have way less wear than mine.

I had a 78' identical to the one you first had even had the bridge cover. It was a hair over 9 lbs and played like a dream. I had other P basses and it sat home allot more of a collection/recording bass so I traded it on a 74' Gibson acoustic ...could'nt pass on that Gibson.

Glad you found a keeper some of the 70's Fenders are gems.

Odd that it has the long intonation screw. I thought that was typically seen on -72-ish - '74-ish.

Either way, looks awesome! I have that same color combo, but a 73.

Love Mocha specially with a Rosewood neck, but maple looks nice too

Anyway, tuners are MIJ, the ends are'nt rounded off and they've got that drill hole in the middle.

For me it's all in the weight and the neck. Is it a nice weight and does it play nice. Things like hardware etc can be sorted later.

Long bridge screw is from 68 to 73 so you may have an original old bridge which can be sold off.
